hi Ive been offered a carb zx9r for good money
whats peoples verdict on these they seem to have a good power output?
ta chris
Depends on the model really, B's are the oldest ones, easily identified by the generator being externally mounted under the carbs, good power
output but heavier than the later models. C & E's look the same and give similar power outputs, the E's have a slighly stronger gearbox.
All good engines especially if cheap. My E gave around 128hp at the wheels with dynojet and freeflowing air filter/exhaust.

hi mate 1999 zx9r c2?
Weakest gearbox from what im lead to believe.
been in a ZX9r Indy and it was quick enough for sure though
Good strong engines with good power, early gearboxes slightly suspect possibly, but apart from that a cracking engine.
Cheers
Alex
ok is the gearbox thing easily overcome at a later date
ta chris
Dont know if the later gear boxes are a direct replacement for the weaker ones but i doubt it.
Dont know if anyone offers an uprated gearbox for them?
If not then just keep an eye out for spares
They're quite low geared though, so you'll need quite a high ratio diff....
Chris, if the engines cheap dont worry too much about the box, plenty of peeps have had no problems using the C in becs. My first engine was a C, when
it blew up (dont ask
) i stripped it for spares and the box was fine.
I once read on a US site that someone over there does a kit to uprate the box, something to do with better ident pin springs?
ok everyone thanks for the advice
so what ratio would I need
ta chris
3.62 and 15" wheels is ok, although you will hit the rev limiter in top on long straights (donnington) fine for road use tho.
Iv'e now gone to 3.14 with 13" wheels.
3.38 would be a good allrounder.

I've got ZX9R 'E' in my car and it is a cracking engine!
I have been told that the gearboxes are a direct replacement from 'C' to 'E' but don't know anyone who has done it. I have
an absolutely mint 'E' gearbox in my garage looking for a new home!
I've never really noticed the difference in gearing compared to other cars I have been in. I run a 3.62 LSD and think it is OK.
so what happens when you go higher than 3.62
it all gets confusing
do you mean higher gear as in 3.38 & 3.14 ?
or lower gear (but higher number) such as 3.92 ? (i.e. std 4cyl sierra)
either way, use one of the gear ratio calculators:
http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/inforatios.html
http://www.quaife.co.uk/Motorsport
I'm sure someone here can tell you what ratio's the gearbox has to make these work
sorry yeah I meant higher numbers like 3.89 ta chris
Hi just remember that whith the escort axle the highest ratio you will get is a 3.54 wich is not quite high enough for the zx9.
With 15" wheels you will not get to 120 mph cant remember the exact figures but worth looking to see what others have as a top speed with thier
gearing.
cheers matt
hi so the chap who reckons hes got a 3.89 live axle MK2 is deff wrong
No, 3.89 is probably the most common English axle ratio. It's a lower ratio diff than the 3.54, though the number is bigger. It relates to the
number of turns on the input of the diff giving 1 turn of output - the smaller the number the higher the ratio!
