Air filter opinions
locoboy - 5/3/07 at 07:29 AM

Im thinking about air filter set ups for my 4xv R1.

I think i am going to have to ditch the airbox as it will not fit under my bonnet.

I will have room for a sausage filter or individual sock filters.

I have not seen anybody using individual sock filters - is there a reason?

Also where is the best place to get a sausage filter from?

Cheers

The sock type filters ruin the airflow into the carbs/throttle bodies. They should be a very last resort. The sausage filter is best, but don't buy one too low. You need as much space above the carb bellmouth as you can get, at least as much as the diameter of the carb/throttle body.

Do you need a carb diameter's gap between the carb and the filter or the carb and the bonnet? I had a foam filter on mine that had 20mm clearance from the bellmouth to the filter and it seemed to work nicely.

Of course, everything is a compromise based on the engine installation that you have. If you get the opportunity to see an engine on the dynamometer, it is surprising just how far the induction pressure wave can visible protrude outside of the carb mouth. If you fit a low filter then the engine will still perform, but probably not at it's optimum.
