Clutch engaged too far
robertwa - 6/5/07 at 05:16 PM

Just as I thought I was going to drive the car under its own steam for the first time, I realised I lost all drive. I have an Yamaha FJR1300 with hydraulic clutch. I must have over travelled the clutch. I took off the clutch cover and can see that the friction plates are loose - I can jiggle them a bit. So it looks like something jammed inside.
Anyone seen this happen before (I don't have a hard stop, but will soon)? Is there an easy way of freeing it up, or does the whole clutch need to be dis-assembled?

Does the FJR have a diaphragm spring like the (pre 2004) R1s etc, as opposed to the more conventional 5 or 6 coil springs? If so Id imagine you could just undo the cover plate to free it up, or even put a bit of force on the plate to pop it back over-centre?

Here is a picture of the clutch, it is a diaphragm type...

I looked at the manual, and to change the clutch it mentions removing the rear counter balance shaft. I am hoping I can just loosen the spring plate and take it apart......

All good, took off the diaghragm plate and set it all back up again.
Thanks ofr the help Chris.

Now for that hard stop!!

Probably won't make it down today, Robert. Still up here in LA visiting the granddaughter for the first time - good stuff. Anyhow, having a "visitor" on the day you're trying to get it running can be stressful. Whenever I was working on the car I really didn't want visitors - they were a time sink. Anyhow, best of luck and I *will* make it over, driving Kimini.

And yeah, a clutch stop is needed, else it'll happen again.

No worries Kurt. Come down next time you are free. I need a certain book signed!!!
