What Gauge Gear Selector
mistergrumpy - 26/5/07 at 09:21 AM

What gauge steel have people used to make gear selector mechs? I was thinking that the 1-1.2mm stuff I have might be a bit thin and start bto deform whereas solid stuff might twist unless its drilled down its centre.

I'm sorry I 'm not really understanding what the question is? Are you asking what wall thickness of tube to use ? What is solid stuff and why would it twist if it wasn't drilled down it's centre.

Sorry to be of absolutely no help

No worries mate, ignore me. I'm thinking out loud again I think. Yes I was looking at what gauge to use. I thought that solid steel was more prone to twisting than 'gun drilled' steel or so I've read and what with there being a lot of torque applied to the gear change mech, i.e. the jiggery pokery bit between the gear knob and gear change on the engine I wondered what gauge was best

how much force are you planning on applying?

a good one is some threaded bar with some sleeve bar from b and Q

On the subject, where can you get the splined part of the selector mechanism from ?

I used 8mm threaded rod brazed into thin wall steel tubing (8mm id) from B+Q Warehouse. I tried aluminium tube but it flexed too much unless you use larger diameter.

Ah. Tis B&Q stuff I have. Guess that'll do then?Thought it might be a bit too thin.

which part of the splined mechanism do you mean, the shaft thats built into the engine or the gear change arm, if it's the arm I think most jap bikes use the same spline

I remember this (vaguely) from a while ago.

From memory Suzuki use a 14mm spline (maybe Aprilia too).

The others use a 12mm spline.

There was a posting from someone who had bits for this a while ago, and so might be able to help. Look up rick1962uk
on these pages. He seems to stock these bits.

The other solution is to just pick up a gear change arm, about £8 on e-bay.
