BEC Batteries
mackei23b - 13/6/07 at 09:06 PM

Hi there

Just about to start the engine (ZX9R), but I need to buy a battery.

I'm not sure whether to go for a bike battery (OK it's light but needs constant attention). Or is it less hastle to use a small car battery?

What have oyu used on a BEC?

Cheers

Ian

BEC battery and an Optimate type charger = no hassles at all.

Ive got an Oxford "Oximiser" charger which was about £20 from M&P, and had the same battery for over 2 years with no problems at al, the only "hassle" is needing power in your garage of course!

What kind of weight is a Bike battery - I've had plenty in my hands, but never stuck any on the scales...

I've got a full car battery in mine, which given my old one was starting to go off came in handy at times, as I could still go for a drive as long as I left it on charge the night before!

Been using a standard Yausha bike battery for a year without an optimiser - no bothers! Plus it's very light...

i was thinking of having a bike battery perminantly installed, with a suplimentary car battery for reliability on the road. Just unplug on track.

Does a car battery put any more demands on the regulator rectifier than a bike battery?

Pete, I really wouldnt bother, spend the money on an optimate instead. Bike batteries only start dying when left for a few months with no charge, or quicker if you have any residual drain from slightly wonky electrics etc. If you're using it regularly then it shouldnt be a problem though.

skootz, I think the average bike battery weighs about 3kgs

another vote for the perfectly reliable bike battery

if your leaving it for 2 months though get an optimate

Another vote here for a reliable bike battery with a little drain but a battery trickle charger...

about 3.5kg seems to be the answer.
