Have any of the BECmassif mastered clutchless shifts? I'm going for a blat TM and fancy having a pop at it. I've been on the ST1100 forums and apparently the box takes it without complaint on a bike.....

What's the secret?

If you mean upshifts then yeah, ease off the gas a bit and bang the next gear home. Works best when you are caning it.

If you've not ridden a bike before, then the easiest way to describe to do it would probably be:

try it in a higher gear first - 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th etc.
maybe around 5000 revs.
drive along accelerating normally then back off the accel pedal as you would to change gear anyway.
give the lever a brisk (not too quick) and firm pull (or push) into the next gear.

It should go ok, and even if it wasn't perfect it wouldn't do a whole heap of damage! and you will very quickly get the hang of it.

I never use the clutch going up the box once I get past second, just a slight lift of the throttle and change up!
My 4th year now as bec and never had a gearbox problem yet so nothing to worry about!

If anything it makes the car feel a lot smother once you get the hang of it (stops the clunk when you change gear)

worth pointing out that the reason it works is you're unloading the engine so the gears can move freely. so when accelerating you back off the gas, shift, then back on the gas.

It does not work if you are cruising. If moving at constant speed e.g. in traffic then there is likely to be load on the engine from engine braking for example. So don't practice it if you're not accelerating.

If you do want to clutchless shift when cruising then you need to either: -

- accelerate a little, then back off, THEN shift.
- decelerate a little, then give a little throttle whilst changing.

Basically your gearbox will be under load during engine braking or accelerating. when you're cruising you will rarely be "inbetween" the 2, and this is the only bit where you can change easily.

As a general rule I use the clutch unless I'm properly accelerating because it's a bit hit-and-miss otherwise. Just trying to explain how it actually works.

My CBR1000F engine much preferred clutchless shifts when doing anything other than pootling and feel seemed to be quite important Quite how the R1 will cope with the Kliktronic system remains to be seen.

It's for the Hewland racing box, but the principle is identical.

When accelerating hard, lift off the throttle and shift. easy. Its's not so smooth if accelerating gently or at a constant speed so use the clutch. use the clutch for down shifts too.

From a bike point of view I wouldn't dream of doing a clutch-less DOWN change. I imagine it would be even worse in a BEC with all the weight of the car...

I'm not saying they CANT be done right with practise, but I wouldnt fancy practising them in my pride and joy!

Up changes are great, seem quicker and don't damage the box.

Motorcross riders never use the clutch to change up or down, but then there engines are rebuilt all the time and they get new bikes every year... think that says it all really

As above, but only on upchanges at speed. You'll soon get used to the fact that you only have to lift off slightly, but at first you should try lifting off pretty much fully until you get the hang of it.

Just had a short blast in mine tonight, thought i would give it a go, i have tried before, but did'nt realise you had to back off first, but you dont half motor with clutchless shifts.

upshifts only for me but clutchless all the time when going for it, with a little care with the change into 2nd across the neutral gate.
heel/toe with clutch on the down shift.
