which bike engines need dry sump
zzr1100rick2 - 8/12/07 at 04:06 PM

Hi as per title which bike engines are best suited to NOT needing a dry sump or accusump cheers Rick

r1

I've never seen a dry sump on a BEC with:

R1
Fireblade

I've seen a dry-sump setup on:

Hyabusa
Blackbird

I'm about to see a dry-sump setup on:

ST1100 (due to limited ground clearance)

zx12r works fine with just a modded sump and is well tested and blade engine and r1 also blackbird engine but if you use a busa would go dry sump to be safe hope this helps cheers paul

That's a bold statement about the blackbird motor.

That is a difficult question to answer and depends on loads of factors. What vehicle, front engined or middy? Which tyres? What sort of use you will be putting the BEC too?

If it's just road, then you'll probably get away without a dry sump on just about any bike engine you'd care to mention.

Put BEC's on the track and a few will need to be dry sumped depending on the track and choice of tyres. Race it with slicks fitted and even more will need dry sumping.

We've had a Blade and ZX12R on track with R888 road legal slick's and neither have required either a dry sump or accusump. Maybe we're not driving hard enough....

Phil

Engines I would definitely protect to a greater extent would be Blackbird, GSXR and Busa (the latter, simply to protect my investment, not necessarily because they are more prone to oil surge)

i run acar with zx12r scraped 3 engines with wet sump should be dry sumped, blackbirds need to be dry sumped and hayabusa wet sumped had more dry sumped busas blow up ,r1 are has good has anything

I good friend of mine took a Spire GTR with ZX12 (wet sump) on track recently, and within one session had trashed the engine due to oil surge.

Apparently the same engine/car combo had withstood many trackdays with no problems. The main difference is that he is an RGB racer and was braking late and taking corners at speeds that made the owners eyes pop out.

So, as mentioned above, the answer is really dependent on the use the car is going to get, what tyres you use and who is going to drive it. In my experience, only blades and R1's have proven themselves to be bullet proof with a wet sump set up. The jury is out on the rest.

Cheers

ZX9R

Well lets hope not anyway!

bassett - 8/12/07 at 08:14 PM

If the ones that arent usually dry sumped like the R1 is it worth adding baffles?

zxrlocost - 8/12/07 at 08:32 PM

agqain some do so i suppose its worth it for how mch they are

but I could also tell you of as many people who have left it standard no probs

It begs the questions though... was it a chopped sump, was it baffled, did it have a modified PRV, slicks etc etc etc. The fact that he is/was an RGB driver does make 'some' difference, but it's not the main reason surely?

Weelll, I managed to blow a bird on the road, and I'm not the world's best driver, so I'd recommend it be done. Going A series next, no way even I can blow that up!

As I remember it was a baffled sump (Zcars?) and running Yokohama 048's. You are right different sump mods can make a difference, but the main contributor will be what sort of G forces it will be subjected to. The fact that the driver happens to be in RGB is no great a significance, the fact that he was the overall champion last year is though

It has to be said that the roadholding capabilities of the Spire should be well in excess of cars such as the Indy etc so you may get away with a baffles sump there (possibly)

I forgot to mention that ZX-9's seem also to be pretty bullet proof with a baffled wet sump. Underrated engine that one and cheap as chips too.

id agree there, i took my old 9 on about 3 track days on r888s and it never missed a beat.

imp paul - 11/12/07 at 08:57 AM

it was a Mk sump and the engine has been in the car years and done lots and lots of hard track days i know this as paul is a mate of mine as paul said to me the motor was tired and had done very well also done lots of demo runs so on that note hellfires is going strong as are many but its up to you at the end of the day wet sump for me just modded to take more oil and baffled
