Reverse tumbler?

Has anybody ever copied the tumbler mechanism of a lathe for their reverse and successfully had it working?

I have no idea / experience but I would think this is a less than ideal setup for a reverse box, the gear train is long and it is all turning (absorbing HP) even when not in reverse. Also packaging would be more complex as input and output shafts are not in line.
