R1 engine height

Hi another post for another question i will have to start doing something soon all ive been doing for the past 2 months is reading on here and calling company's about my bec conversion but im glad of my patience as i seem to learn something new everyday so hopefully at the end ofthis i should have a half decent car!

Anyway i was wondering if someone would be so kind as to measure the highest point of the R1 lump in a locost chassis from top chassis rail.

I need to sort a bonnet and what to make sure it fits underneath, i know some people have turned the airbox or carbs upside down to help.

Anyway much appreciate all this help.

I currently have a Luego locost scuttle which is about 250mm high im not sure how high the bonnet and nose cone is as havent got yet and didn't want to until i was sure it would cover the engine.

If its a book chassis and bodywork you'll really struggle to get it under the bonnet. I have the 2003 engine which has slightly deeper sump but lower intake than a carbed engine, and the sump sits just over an inch below the bottom chassis rail yet the throttle body trumpets are smack on the same height as the top of the bonnet line, so even if the GRP was 1mm thick it would still touch, and you'd be blocking off half the throttle body mouths and wouldnt be able to run a filter!

Notice in this pic that the side of the bonnet isnt actually touching the chassis rail, so there isnt the clearance as would first appear.

I thought it would be yourself who replied you must be one of the most active in the BEC forum chris.

Thanks for the pic but what was your solution or is it just a very tight fit ?

And what bonnet is that from in other pics it looks like it was a stuart taylor bonnet ?

For a Locost chassis you will be cutting holes in the bonnet.... You have a choice of leaving the foam filter/airbox open to the elements or fitting some kind of bonnet scoop over the protruding bits.

How much it protrudes through the bonnet depends on how low you want to hang the engine below the bottom chassis rail, I wouldn't personally go more than 1".

Cheers

Paul

As Paul says, I had to cut a hole in the (Stuart Taylor) bonnet.
I think you'll probably find that most scuttles etc are roughly the same height give or take a few mm, otherwise the proportions would look wrong. The MK Indy has extra depth in its chassis which does help though, so if you're still at the chassis stage you could possibly look at doing something similar.

Here's a thought - in May this year I had an off-road excursion in my R1 Striker. When I originally fitted the R1 motor (after ditching my x-flow) I thought long and hard about my engine position. I decided to mount it so that the bottom of the sump was flush with the bottom of the lower chassis rail, even though it would mean a massive protrusion of carbs and stuff out of the bonnet.

It has well and truly paid for itself, as when I beached the car it came to rest on the chassis rails and floor, and not the sump!

Think about it before you let it hang down below the chassis rails.....

No, it's a phrase, as in 'beached whale!'

I had an occurrence where I left the road, got tangled in a chevron sign and parked it on a mound where no wheels were touching the ground!

It's all back in action now, and better than it ever has been!
