R1 with broken mount. Buy or not ?
Hi all.
Someone -company- proposed me a deal on a complete 2002/03 engine (complete engine, harness, air box, rad, fan, fuel pump, etc...) for 825 UKP
delivered.
The downside is that there is a broken engine mount. They will take a few photos and send'em to me but I'm already trying to get your
feelings on this.
Will this be a very expensive repair?
Would you take it?

Joao - with a damaged mount there can never be a simple answer it depends on the damage which 'may' have occured during the fall.
Bearing in mind most of (BEC) our engines have been dropped it is a risk we all take in this situation. To take it forward I would at least ask for
pictures with particular emphasis on detailing the amount of damage done to the mount and any other scrapes.
Our engine had been dropped and cracked a mount which was welded up and all seems to be fine - but you never know.
Best case is your £800 is money well spent. Worse case is a new block, plus time and money to repair it possibly another £800. I would research well
once you are in receipt of detailed pictures.

i brought an accident damaged gsxr 600 a while ago which had been droped when it came to rest the throttle was wide open did the bottum end in i was
told before i bought it, youve gota be carefull its alot of dough to splash out with no proof it even runs

An engine mount can be welded and repaird by a competent professional ally welder, but there are no guarantees it will not distort the cases..
Cases must be bought as matched pairs (upper and lower) so if it cannot be repaired you are looking at either a scrap engine to repair it, or new
cases, which I would recommend you check the price of first...
The R1 has a stacked gearbox and I am told is less prone to case distortion than most.. but I cannot verify this... many people in the bike racing
world repair the cases, including our team, even tho my brother, the rider, told me not to unless you have to..

The 02/03 motor also has a tip over sensor which should have killed the engine when the bike went on its side.
Depends on which mount too. My install doesnt use them all.

It depends on the extent of the damage. If the metal is a bit bent near one of the holes and can be cleaned up by retapping the thread then I would
have no problem using the engine. It the metal is badly split and needs an expensive repair then it may not be worth the money.
The cost of the engine should be cheaper than the normal price of an engine less the cost of the repair.

If it was the same, I'd recommend going for one without the damage!
As someone said, unless it's an utter bargain or you want another motor for spares, I wouldn't bother....

At £825 it is cheaper (maybe £2-300) than a clean Injected R1 engine will generally cost you, so I guess its a calculated risk but Id want to give it
a thorough going over before accepting it.
Maybe pull the end covers off to check for damage (its easy to put a new cover on and hide this) and when doing this you should be able to tell if
theyve been swapped over anyway, if the gasket faces are stuck together then they probably are the original covers and havent been removed, but if one
comes straight off without any resistance and / or the gasket looks like its been reused, then I would be wary. If an end casing has been badly broken
when it was dropped, it may not have done any damage, but at the other end of the scale it could have bent and knackered the crank!
