KAWA ZX10 engine

I've got the chance of the above for £250.00, is this a good price?

Iknow it's not the latest greatest thing but am thinking that it would be a suitable motor to get through SVA and then possibly look for something more modern.

It's complete with carbs harness CDI and 4 into 1

Whats your opinions?

Frank

I looked at a ZX10 and thought that the power and gearing would be good. They are quite old though, which is good for SVA but may not last too long. £250 is cheap though.

I would carefully check the gear ratios before commiting to buy. IIRC it has quite a low overall gear set, so you may find you need a 3.14 diff to get a high top speed / comfortable cruising. The cost of this may out weigh the saving in the initial engine.

Chris Gamlin has a link to a calculator on his signature, but it doesn't include the ZX10.

I found the ratios for the 2004 model year here link, but you might get other years elsewhere.

Putting those ratios into Chris's spreadsheet, suggests a max speed of 105mph in top at 11,700 rpm, using 14" wheels, 65 profile tyres and 3.62 diff.

I'm no expert but if the engine is cheap and available then try it. You might find the ratios work really well.

One thing I found when using the ZZR engine was that everything had to be custom made, exhausts, adaptors, etc. Compare this to R1's / Blades etc, where you can buy an exhaust or adaptor from MK / MNR etc.

Also there weren't a lot of other builders using the same engine. If you look at the number of people who have used R1's, blades etc, you have a much wider knowledge base to gain advice from / ask when it goes wrong!
