R1 end can
Hi guys,
Seen a few R1 end cans on Ebay been keeping an eye out as have heard that there good for keeping some of the noise down for track days.
Some have a black carbon look like this one:

are these original's ? as i thought the original were a grey colour.

Just answered my own question looked on google images and the 98-99 have the carbon look 2000-2001 have the grey look.

Yep, indeedy. The 98 had the carbon type same as that link, where later models had the grey titanium one.
Something to be aware of, the stock 98 can weighs about 5Kgs, over 4 times the weight of a good aftermarket carbon race can.
Yes a race can is on no use for reducing noise, but I bet an aftermarket road can with some additional packing would be a lot less in weight than the
standard can and about the same noise level. Might be worth trying a dB killer, theyre cheap and worth a shot, although Ive not heard (pardon the
pun) if theyre any good.

Standard cans are OK noise wise, but nothing spectacular. Ive got one of the Carbon R1 cans modded to fit my car and its slightly quieter than my old
ST can that I had fitted previously, but it would still almost certainly fail on circuits like Donington, Goodwood and Coombe etc.
Im now going for a large custom made can (about 29" x 7" ) that will probably weigh more than the R1 can, but Id happily trade a couple of
kilos extra for peace of mind and an expanded list of circuits I could go to.
As to the bolt on additional silencers like Merlin sell, from what Ive seen they tend to either strangle the engine like mad and need significant
re-jetting to allow them to be used, or not reduce the noise that much.

I'd like to go to a track day this year but suspect that my exhaust is too loud. Where can I go to get it measured?

Bookatrack have a noise meter you can hire out for about a tenner, or buy a cheap noise meter from Maplin for probably not much more (£30 maybe?).
Neither are likely to give you a truly accurate figure as there's so many variables (buildings close by, weather conditions, accuracy of gauge
etc etc) but it will give you a reasonable idea.
