zx9 starter, is it constantly engaged? i cant see any way for it to disengage, plus when i kill the engine i can hear a starter sort of sound for a split second before it stops spinning. Just thought id check!

yea they are always engaged on a one way clutch set up, its normal on some bike to hear that noise u say about its just the engine partially moving back as it stops against compression.
NO Worries

The starter motors on modern bikes are engaged with the crank or clutch basket via a sprag clutch which isolates the starter from the constant spinning of the engine.

The sound you can hear is probably a bit of both sprag clutch and starter.

As a side note, thats the reason you need to be quick do dip the clutch if you spin a BEC because if the spin stalls the engine and the crank is momentarily made to reverse by you travelling backwards, it will take out the starter motor and/or surrounding casing.
