Over filling with oil?

did an oil change at the weekend and overfilled with oil, is this damaging to my engine? its got a small oil leak so in a few weeks it will b at max again, but i dont want to blow anything up in between.

mh

crankcase pressurre will rise,

sow oil damp or pure oil will be coming in the combustion chamfer sow the engine will runn less clean

also the strain on the engine parts is higher...

with other words over filling is bad wy not top it up to the max level.

Repair the leak, check the level and add if nececary..??

also there is margin between max and min..

why not just drain some off,

as to if it will damage the engine, it all depends if you start it or not

depends by how much and what engine.

If its 1/2 odd itl be fine.

Drain a little off into a pot and fill it to the max level.

Various possible outcomes:

You could end up blowing oil seals.

You might get clouds of smoke behind you as oil splashes up the bores and gets burnt. (been there, done that).

You would be better off draining a bit of oil by easing the drain plug out and letting some dribble out.

I overfilled my r1 engine by 250ml when I did a oil and filter change

not to much not to little

as long as it hasnt got an extra litre or two in it I cant see the problem

lol its too late about starting it up, ive driven to work in it.

I am unsure how much its over filled, the distance on the dipstick from empty to full it another half that over full. Its less than a litre as it was only a 4 litre oil can and i think about that come out (refilling the old one to get rid of). It could b the first time i noticed it but i can see steam (smelly oil vapour i think) comming out of the oil catch tank filter, only a small amount, but its the first time i seen this.

yes i think its best to emlty a small amount when i get home, i didnt want to do it last night as it was 11pm and i need to jack the car up to get the bucket under it.

with overfill my r1 takes 3.1 litres usual it would be 2.8ish

didnt you find out how much was supposed to go in first

What a mess!

even if it only was 1mm on the dipstick in reality it could be 2litres overfill!!

it just depend on the area size on that high!

sow always make sure you add what it needs 2litres, then watch the glass/dipstick add to max
start it for 10sec.
turn off
rewatch and topup if nececary..

how can you bee at throwing 4litres at it?

would debleed the thing an bit faster now!

i understand, i think the manual says it takes 4 odd litres with a new oil filter. Its not burning it out of the exhaust.

i was rushing it thats why i funked the level up.

That's the state I got myself into - overfilled a bit, no smoke when stopped or driving around quietly - then I booted it hard to come out of a slip-road onto the A12 and left a huge cloud of smoke behind me! The oil had surged to the back of the sump and gone up behind the piston on cylinder 4. I think I left a few motorists rather unimpressed that day...

funny how things remind u of ur mistakes, i did something silly when i first started working on my car, its was my first one so i guess its learning my lesson! i was changing the oil in the engine, but accidently empited the gearbox instead, not noticing i decided to put some flushing oil through the engine, i poured some in and started the engine, it had no oil in the gearbox and at least 11 litres in the engine! amazingly it started and ran ok. until oil starting pouring out of various orifices! when i eventally realised what i had done i emptied the engine and put the correct amount of oil in. it seems ok and have not done any damage. but was a lucky escape. i feel pretty foolish as it seems so obvious now. i guess thats the fun of learning how to work on cars!

depends on engine -- I once saw a BMC B series filled to the top of the rocker cover it survived, however on more modern engines it is a bit different over fill a Honda engine and will flood the breather system and put the MAF light on, it can also knock out a a lambda sensor due oil fouling.

To much oil is sow bad!

its called maximum!! infact it has the same prioriti as minimum!! but minimum generates another way of feeling right..

also a engine is still a machine sow you never can cure with oil things..

draining oil...

Now dont laugh..

Oil dont trickle out, like the leak - you'll find it wont come out until the plug is fully out. Then it'll come out (with the weight of the oil on top) at quite some force missing the receptical - as you were expecting just a trickle.

Oil (being quite slippy) may loosen your grip on the drain plug, as you frantically move to catch the oil from p1ssing on the floor, causing the plug to fall (1 in a million chance) into the recepticle - a 1ltr oil can , with a narrow top.

Your then stuck under the car, groping around for your phone (which you put out the way on the scuttle top), with your thumb in the drain plug hole - to phone someone (having to wait for them to stop laughing) round to assist!

Hi tim, ive done about 1000 miles, its had 1 lot of oil thru it by toping it up all the time from the oil leaks here and there (unless im filling it to the wrong level, im removing the dip stick and just letting it rest on the threads as per the manual?). still got one leaks around the filter, as the oil pipes are there also its really hard to pin point where its comming from and it only really looses oil when i thrash it.

lol, ive done the boot, lined it with abs sheet and didnt realize it expands with heat, it looked really bowed from the heat we are getting at the moment. ordering a sheet of carbon fibre to replace it.

the water leaks are easy to spot. all i need to do it replace the seals i hope.

still flattening the battery due to me not knowing how to start it right. i trickle charge it every night to help me not do it.

huge fun tho, went to the yorkshire moors last w/e, great drive. gave me more confidance with the cars reliability
