I've seen only 1 R1 engine that has popped on R1s (as opposed to in BECs).
From what I remember the R1 motor is something like no liners and a nikasil bore coupled with a sodding powerful output. The result is engines not
being run in well (i.e glazed bores rather than nice matted finish). They don't get enough stick during run in.
If run in poorly they then consume oil (usually you get a nice puff of fully sythetic stink if you are behind one when it pulls away ).
I've heard of R1 engines using a litre of oil in 100 miles at the worst end of things. But that was with the first R1 engines so it may be
considerably better these days.
I've also never liked yammy gear boxes (but then I'm comming from TDM experiences).
But then I've seen a couple of kwacks ZX9Rs with nackered cranks which is unusual.
Hondas just seem to go on and on. Suzukis do too. I remember a friend of mine having an old GS550 with cracked intake rubbers, two bolts missing from
the cam bearing clamp thingies and oil leaks on the rocker box. Still ran fine even though it should have blown up long ago.

to be fair on one of the engines the gearbox failed and on the other it dropped a rod.
bloody messy though and it wrecked the complete engine apart from the gearbox which was salvaged to make one good complete engine
