registration query

I am currently building my second kit car which is a
bike engined lotus 7 replica. As it is a book built
chassis/locost which I built (build your own sportscar
£250) there is no chassis number, on my previos build
(robin hood 2b) one was issued. Also the engine is
from a 1992 honda fireblade N reg. I have used a
cortina mk5 back axle, propshaft, steering column and
front uprights and the vehicle has all the original
cortina brake components fitted.Could you please tell
me if this kit will be a Q plated car or age related
and will I need to fit a catalytic convertor? I look
forward to hearing from you shortly. Many thanks
Duncan Mould.

Welcome to the forum, Duncan.

No doubt others will be along soon with some more detailed info but if you have used mostly Cortina bits and have the Cortina's V5 as evidence, then I think you should be able to get an age-related registration.

I think a cat is required for engines frmo August 1995. The engine will likely need a cat as N-reg started in August 1995, unless you have some proof e.g. manufacturer's documentation that that engine number was actually built before August 1995

I have a feeling that there only certain major components that count as "donor" parts when being considered for an age related plate, so you may struggle. Certainly check this out as its rather hazy in my head but I think its something like needing to use 3 out of these 5 major components: chassis, engine, gearbox, back axle and steering.

If that is correct (and it may well not be) then obviously you're only going to be able to use 2 out of 5 with a BEC build so wouldnt qualify.

As to working out the age of the blade lump, firstly check the engine number, if it begins with SC33 then its a 919cc so almost certainly post August 1995 (first used in the '96 model year) & will need a cat. If it starts with SC28 then its an 893cc so will probably be old enough to bypass the cat requirement, but the onus is still on you to prove it, usually with a £30 letter from Honda if you don't have the original V5 for the bike etc.

You're marginal (without looking at the relative reg documentation) re the q plate & you shouldn't need a cat, but there's no such thing as a '92 "n" plate, must be 94/95

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

The 'Built Up Vehicle Inspection Report' V627/1, list major components for a car as;

Chassis/Body Shell
Axles
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine
Suspension (front and back)

You only need to use 2 of the above to qualify for an age related plate, although the more you use, the better chance you have.

If you have the V5's for both vehicles, then you can choose which age related plate you want, ie, N Reg Fireblade or Cortina. You can list the Engine and Transmission as the two major components to qualify for the N reg if you so wished. If you have neither V5's, then it's looking more likely to be a Q plate. As the engine looks like it could be 1995, you'll need a letter confirming whether its pre or post 1st August 1995, for the emissions test at SVA.
