R1 Engine number/model correlation

Hi all.

I got an R1 engine from Malc on Saturday (quite an adventurous little drive for anyone without a Land Rover - really enjoyed )

It's meant to be a 5JJ, but I keep seeing parts with 4XV stamped on them (airbox and some ancillary parts - nothing on the engine itself).

Is there any way of double checking this against the engine number?

It's no problem apart from buying the clocks to match (apparantly both cloocks are interchangeable in their connection, but give false readings for speed).

I'd rather find out now while it's not an expensive mistake!

PS - For anyone going BEC who hasn't sourced an engine yet, get on to Malc (Yorkshire Engines) - you won't do much better for a friendly service, good parts and decent prices!

I'll go and have another search around the head - couldn't see anything before.

Just had a look - it says 4XV00 on the head (black magnesium bit), but also says 5JJ00 on the block just above the clutch. I'll go with 5JJ.

Does it have the exhaust air bleed rubbish? If so, it's a 5JJ.....

Yeah, Malc told me to take it off and either blcok the holes or join the pipes together to bypass the unit.

I'll also have to wait a see what I need to do about the airbox - I quite fancy putting a duct in the nose and running it to a sealed airbox (home made ram air).

Its not a bad idea to go for a sealed airbox to get cool air into the engine, but don't expect any significant ram-air, its effects on the bikes are only significant well into triple figures so in a BEC that can't get over 130mph, you're never going to gain much if anything at all.

Get the AIS off the motor, I think that's what caused me so much grief at the SVA.

Even my injected motor has 4XV parts.

Its very easy to cut the AIS pipes, use a vice and a torch to weld each one. Then ditch the all other AIS bits.
Also don't forget the extra clutch plate (spring) and the baffle plate.
