BEC (Yamaha Fazer) Clutch
So, got rid of all my niggling little issues today and was just settling into the swing of Elvington today when all of a sudden...
'Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'... the clutch completely gives up.
Just wondering where I go from here?
- Should I take the whole thing out to examine the damage (I'm not sure what actually 'goes' when the clutch stops working -
presumably the plates?)
- Standard Yamaha or competition upgrade?
- Where or who do I approach for a bog standard Yamaha clutch (don't want to get ripped off)
- Where / who / which make do I go for if I decide for an upgrade?
In all honesty I jsut want one rock hard, heavy biting clutch. How best do I acheive this?
A big hello and thanks to all those I spoke to today at Elvington. You are a nice bunch!

What does the clutch do / not do? Does it engage / not engage, does it slip?
Not sure if the Fazer has a diaphragm spring like the R1? If so that can turn inside out and hold the clutch disengaged all the tume if its
over-actuated so that could be it. Other than that, its not usually the clutch itself that causes the sudden failure you seem to be suggesting, so
maybe its simply the cable or the actuator arm thats slipped / broken?

I popped my R1 clutch spring inside out the first time I drove it by pulling it too far. I even pulled the pressure plate out so that the teeth
didn't engage. Easy to put it back together.
Its worth having a look as the clutch is not hard to get to. You may even be able to reuse the gasket if it comes off cleanly.

With regards to the problem, the clutch has shown some signs of slippage in 5th and 6th gears for the last two trackdays. I should have read into this
a little more but I had so many other things going on with the car, it basically got overlooked (and hadn't caused issue).
A few weeks back I did actually change the springs to alleged 'uprated' springs. Being honest, they felt no different from the
originals.
So today on the track I noticed increased slippage in 3rd and 4th gears, and half a lap later there was no bite at all... just slipping clutch and a
nice smell of cash to be spent!
I'll dismantle the clutch tomorrow or next weekend but I do have a feeling that it's knackered.
I'm just trying to organise myself so I know what to buy and where to buy from. Had a quick peek on eBay and it's not too good for this
kind of thing.

Id just take it all to bits then see what you need. For replacement Ive found the standard Yamaha plates (on the R1 anyway) to be pretty good so Id
just replace with more of the same personally.
It still sounds a bit odd for it to go from minor slipping to complete lack of clutch bite in half a lap though, so Id check that your cable isnt
snagging / allowing the clutch to drag, and also check for any debris inside the basket and actuator that could stop the clutch actuating properly.
Also change the oil before fitting the new clutch (with bike specific oil obviously) because if its slipped enough to burn out then its likely to have
contaminated the oil a bit.
