Which R1
Hi after a lot of thought i think im thinking of a R1 for my 7, what year R1 engine is the one to go for and injection or throttle bodies etc?

It depends what you want to spend,
you can probably pick up a 98/99 4xv r1 for about £800 now and it will still be a very very entertaining drive and push out approx 150bhp.
Or you can spend upwards of £1700 and get a very recent one with very low mileage pushing out around 170-180 bhp.
I just sold a 98/99 r1 car and to be honest thats what i wold build again and again and again.

If it is already registered and your CO limits are ok on your V5, then go carbs.
I personally would go injection, but you will need to add in extra costs like a power commander to remap your fuel.

I bet on the 2002/03 inj. I probably would bet on that again.
Easely setup (through Power Commander) and not that expensive (£1000 - £1200)

2004 engines onwards have a higher rev limit which means more noise. You'll need a lot of silencing for most tracks and quite a bit for SVA.
The gearing is suited to the higher revs too so it'll be noisy on the motorway. The low down pull is slightly worse too
2002 / 03 FI engines are meant to be slightly better than the carbed ones, being smoother, having more low range pull and a touch more power. You
have to have a power commander to refuel them for your new airbox and exhaust and you need return fuel lines to your tank.
I have a carbed engine and it is just fine. I made a tuned airbox to improve the roll on of power at the low end. It is a nice cheap engine.
2007 engines are a 16v design rather than the old 20v. I don't know much about them other than that.

I got a 03 R1 5PW and I'm happy with it.
TBH I prefer the idea of a Power Commander and a laptop rather than fiddling with carbs.
I also get a lot better fuel economy than my old Blackbird.
Depends on what speed I cruise on the motorway I've got about 37/38mpg (with a 3.38). Up it about 10mph and it will be more like 33-35mpg.
I know people don't buy these sorts of cars for fuel economy but I'm considering a 'ring trip in it soonish and it makes a large
difference to the cost to get there and back vs my mate with an XE engined twin 45 carb Westfield who gets 22mpg cruising at m-way speeds.
I've heard the same about the later engines, more top end power but you need to rev it, less lower end torque and the gearing doesn't lend
itself so well either.
Plus when given the choice of 1litre engines of that era (and price and power output) some people rate the ZX10 or GSXR more highly.

Interesting comment about MPG. I get 30 - 35 on the road with a 3.62 diff. Yamaha claimed 32 MPG for the carbed bike and 34 for the early EFI.
