clutch return

as I was getting clutch slip with my 03 R1 I went for a barnett upgrade but I am struggling to get the clutch to return

Having looked in via the oil filler the clutch comes out fine but when it returns it fails to return completely (1 or 2mm shy of full return).
the bolts are torqued correctly so I have eliminated that as the cause so I am looking at the following

1. pivot point on clutch pedal wrong
2. lever arm on clutch arm of bike not set correctly (SWMBO gone to get me circlip pliers so I can tweak this externally rather than keep taking the cluch cover off)
3. are my clutch plates done ?

any help would be most appreciated as my SVA retest is in 2 days time !!!!!!!!

You've probably fitted the pressure plate in the incorrect position. Take the cover off again, remove the clutch springs and remove the pressure plate. Look on the back of the plate and you'll see that it fits over the splines that the steel plates slide on to. It will only fit over the spline correctly in either one or two positions and it is probably marked to show this.

If you take the cable off does it release?

When you installed the new springs, as you tightened them were you preloading them (i.e. tightening against the springs)? If not, the springs are too short and you've been supplied with the wrong ones. Even if your plates are knackered there should be enough preload so that you're tightening against the springs.

It really does sound like either the pressure plate isn't seating correctly over the clutch centre, you don't have enough slack on the cable or the springs are too short. Or, you've left out a clutch plate.....?
