R1 gearbox 2nd gear knackered

initial suspicions were diff problem but on a further investigation it looks like 2nd gear is on its way out. thanks hellfire for the tip off......
1st gear and 3rd to 6th fine
2nd is very noisy it sounds like a straight cut box when in second.
hard acceleration causes the engine to spin up to the red line once near the top of the rev range....every other gear is fine by the way.
doesnt always do it but its on ots way.
does anyone have any experience of changing an R1 box.
Is is a full box change or can you replace 2nd gear.
Also anyonecwith spares please let me know before i post on the wanted section.
repair deadline 2 weeks....olivers mount hillclimb looms

The "spinning up when near the red line" sounds more like clutch to me, I cant see how knackered gears would cause this symptom unless the dogs totally disengage in which case you'd totally lose drive and it would effectively be in neutral?

If it is the gear then you should be able to replace the 2nd gear pair, as long as the rest of the gears / dogs are in good condition I dont see a need to replace them all.

R1 engines are famous for chewing second gear.

Have a look H ERE for a microfiche of the gearbox.

And HERE for a manual.

If it is jumping out of second it'll probably be the dog clutches. The XS1100 suffers the same problem have a look HERE for a Locost fix that may be worth a try.

If you decide to replace 2nd gear, then you'd be best off replacing it's mate, cos if it's the dog clutches then both will be goosed.

Can we have a "drunk too much vodka smiley"? :-}
