running problems?? NOT ANY MORE!

I got my car back from Holeshot today,I took it out and it ran fine, after about 6 miles it started running lumpy almost as if it was overfueling, or a pug not working 100%, It then cleared itself and was fine for about 2minutes and the running rough again,

The engine bay temperature is really hot and im wondering if the leads or coils could be breaking down, or I need a new set of plugs, it deffinatley stays on 4 cylinders,

it also seems to run hot really quickly at low speeds so I think i need to get more air flow into the nose cone, oil temp seems to be about 90-110,

Any help appreciated, ill be gutted if I dont make Snetterton

Make sure that if you have an electric rad fan, that it is wired to go with the airflow.
Stationary your engine will be cooled, but at speed it will be fighting the airflow and cook your engine.
I did my head gasket last week before I realised!!!!!
All is well now though

Are all air hoses fitted where they should be? Is it on carbs?

Is the tank baffled? The reason I ask this is if it ran fine on the dyno but runs poorly on the road, it could be fuel starvation from the fuel sloshing about in the tank.

It's always difficult to know where to point you without looking at it....

It did run fine on the road for a few miles and then started to play up, yes the tank is baffled, does popping when coming off the throttle point to running lean?

Yes its on carbs and all the hoses are where they should be, its not had new plugs though,

Id love to get it back to holeshot but they are 180 miles away, so at the mo after spending out loads of money im really p!ssed off

Thats why it should be going back to holeshot, ring them and see what they say, but it sounds like it may be a mixture issue...

I would be screaming for them to collect it and get it sorted after spending that money!

popping on overrun is i believe down to unburnt fuel in the exhaust, which means rich. Spluttering is rich, stuttering (hesitating) is weak, as far as i know.

I cant understand how it can be fine for a few miles and then startto play up, it did claer for a few seconds.

If a plug was breaking down would this cause unburnt fuel??

i believe so. If it is running as hot as you say, you might've cracked it/them. My friend tells me that when a car misfires, the first thing he does is change the plugs, as this solves it most of the time. Certainly did in my 406 when it overheated and cracked the plugs.

but you say it is spluttering but not misfiring?

its a bit hard to tell, even when revd up on the spot at about 4k it runs slightly lumpy, it doesnt sound like it goes on to 3 cylinders, but when you go down the road and it trys to boost it doesnt want to know, it sounds like overfuelling but im not sure, I know yhat before it went on the rollinhg road it was runni8ng rich and they had to rejet the carbs to bring it down, I ran the engine quite a lot before it went , just wondering if its knackered the plugs.

Holeshot arent open today.

Did they put those in? Maybe theyve put different plugs than standard to cope with the turbo install.

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator? I think my mate's turbo busa uses a variable regulator that varies with boost, if the hose is blocked or has come off then it won't be varying the fulling in line with the boost pressure.

Changed the plugs as holeshot didnt, its still the same, and i even got a pop from the exhaust when i switched it off, could there be somthing sticking in one of the carbs??

it has got a variable pressure regulator the pipes are fine.

Is the pressure actually increasing though, do you have any way of testing the rising rate of the regulator with a guage etc?

I dont think I have any way of checking it, I have removed the air plenum and found that where one of the connectors is welded on has a small hole, this connects to a pipe about 15mm straight in the middle of the carbs, when blown into the carbs open up, what is this??

This is not right....

Get it back to Holeshot.

The longer you leave it and the more self diagnostics you do, the more likely they are to say 'it was fine when it left here'

They are reputable tuners, and should sort it for you.

Im assuming that if this pipe is leaking then it wiont maintain pressure, causing it to run rich??

technically yes i suppose, especially considering the money paid. However, not necessarily the most diplomatic way to set about getting it fixed? That said, you've paid enough to deserve looking after. Id say yes overall.

To be honest I wouldnt sour the relationship yet by demanding they collect it, I'd offer to take it down yourself but explain that you do feel a bit agreived that you need to do that having spent that amount of time and money with them. You never know, they might offer to collect it anyway or maybe give you some freebies etc to soften the blow, but even if none of this happens on this occasion I think you'll be worse off if you start playing hardball straight away and they refuse.

It could be either to be honest, if its a vacuum pipe then it will be drawing in air and possibly making it run weak.
