Big End Shells and Stretch Bolts

As it has now rained for 40 days and forty nights non stop, I have decided to build an ark.

No sorry, I meant I've started my winter project already, stripping down my two bust engines to make one good un.

So stripped down one of the engines yesterday afternoon. It's not that bad taking them apart, we'll see if it all goes back together OK later! This is the one which ran the bearings. So I stripped the bottom end down and the crank main bearings look ok, as do 3 of the 4 big end bearings. One has gone completely.

Two questions, Haynes says don't re-use the stretch bolts on the con rods? True or false?

Secondly, Haynes advises replacing all the bearing shells as a precaution. Add up all the bearing shells and stretch bolts I'd need and it comes to £95 at my local Kawa dealer. Would I be OK just replacing one set?

Cheers

Mike

stretch bolts for most applications should never be reused.Once torqued, to retorque usually causes fracture and disaster. They dont cost much in the grand scheme.Good luck and hope it all works

If one bearing has picked up then the crank is likely to be scored anyway, Id be very suprised if it wasnt?

ISTR you've got the second engine with the blown gearbox though, so why not just use the that engine with the box from this engine, then you dont need to do any bottom end rebuilding at all?

Yeah that's true Chris, but I was hoping to be able to effect a simple repair on this one without having to split both!

The crank is fine, no visible damage at all.

Will crack on with the original plan, and save the re-shell for another day!

Cheers

Mike
