funny engine noise
My engine is makine a funny noise, a bit like a rolled 'R' when run at low revs (3000 - 4000). When I pick up a bit of speed or at full
throttle at high revs it goes away.
What kind of problem does this noise represent?

its simple take it to an motorbike shop and ask them whats up with it and how much it will cost to fix then take it home and sort it.

My local bike shop will happliy sell me parts but want nothing to do with the engine as its not in a bike. I've tried that before. There is a
local independant bike specialist but I've had a bad experiance of him.

Can you record it? Has it always made this noise or just started recently? Have you changed air filters or rebuiltt he engine recently?
Sounds like induction noise to me.
I've got some good sound recordings from a new camera and mic installed on the car, in the video you can clearly hear the induction noise and a
spring that rattles on my manifold to silencer on the overun

I would check the exhaust for leaks including the AIS whether retained or blanked off. Also check the crankcase breather, the carb rubbers.
Very dificult to diagnose without having being there.

I'd take it to the second nearest bike shop then.
IMO if you are not sure then diagnosis is best left to someone who knows their apples - otherwise lots of time and tons of money can be wasted on a
symtom rather than the cause.

Have a good check around and make sure everything is tight. I could even be resonance from a panel somewhere - I occasionally get that from my
Striker.

Thanks everyone. I've just been in the garage and gone over everything with a spanner to check it's tight. The exhaust is not blowing
and there isn't excess induction noise.
Sat by the exhaust manifold, tugging the throttle cable it all sounds very different than from the driver's seat. The engine is much higher in
pitch than the tail pipe (and just as loud). The rolled R noise seems to come from all directions and so it probably is panel resonance, though
putting a free hand on each panel in turn doesn't change the noise.
I guess I'm just paranoid after all the engine trouble I've had.

Apologies if this is a silly answer, but I don't know any of the history here....
Sounds like the normal chattery noise flatside/slide carbs make?
You're going to tell me now that you're on injection...
