Am i too heavy
I have a tiger cat with a knackered Zetec in. When it was SVA'd it weighed in at 650Kgs with a full tank of fuel.
I'm replacing the engine as it's poo, and was planning on spending 3k at raceline for a brand new zetec with fuel injection bits and bobs
until the thought hit me....wonder if a bike engine would fit.
Any have any thoughts/suggestions?
The bits that scare me are:
Sub-frame, can't weld, got no facilities so where could i get one
Reliability, as it may be heavy will the thing break every 10 seconds
Cost, The engine may be cheap but all my fitments are for a zetec e.g. gearbox, propshaft, cooling, exhaust

You should be able to do a BEC conversion for less than £3K
There are several people on here who have done it - they'll be along to give an idea of cost.
You'll end up with a faster car - whether that's better or not is a matter for debate but it will be faster than a zetec.
Cheers

my 893 blade engined BEC is still fast even with a passenger.
You do notice the weight as it takes the edge off.

That is a lot of money to spend on a Zetec. What sort of spec does that give you?
For £3k you should be able to do a ZX12 conversion. If you were looking at a less powerful/cheaper engine then I would think even if you bought it all
from suppliers you should be looking at £1500-£2000 all in. Factor in another £600 if you want a reverse box. Either way, it will be a different
kettle of fish to a knackered Zetec.
For £3k you could even get a Duratec setup. Yuo can pick up the engine for around £750, add to that an exhaust, bell housing plus all the conversion
bits and you should be well under £3k.

Robin Hood have a supply of brand new 2.0L blacktops for £750. Seems like a good starting point.

Get the Zetec, with that kind of money spent it will eat becs for breakfast and still be nicer to drive.
Are you a Mac user or a retard?

More than happy to pick that gauntlet up.
Edit to add would £3k of CEC power put you where £3k of BEC power would ? The BEC would be more reliable too and every bit as drivable as a tuned CEC
motor. all IMHO of course but digest the snippet below.........
"Before the RGBs went out the Roadsports Championship had their qualifying session. The Roadsports Championship is an eclectic mix of sports
cars, including Nobles, Porsches, a Morgan +8, a TVR Tuscan etc. At the front of the grid the cars will be costing well in excess of £50,000, and yet
the pole winner (Noble) wouldn’t have made the top three in RGB! Furthermore, the third quickest Roadsports runner in a Noble M12 would have qualified
fifteenth in RGB!"

Yea I recall you mentioning it several times...........
well set up 90bhp locost race car, remove motor, insert bike engine, shock horror, it now goes slower, no disrespect but I'm in no rush to rip
the bike engine out and fit a 1300 x flow.

Hi jon . Would not dare sugest you rip the bike engine out. Crossflows are rare enough as they are without you bec guys trying to source them aswell
.
Jesting by the way.

I know there a bit rare but I wish you would compare like with like that all........
You know the lap times well enough, a locost race car and a RGB (locost) race car class C with a bog standard 919 blade engine.
Don't compare a Locost race car lap time with a garage built nothing set up BEC that spends 99% of its time on the road and is also a bit on the
lardy side.

For those that CBA to look here is the lap records for Donington club circuit, both set this year...........
Locost.................1.28.07........ 80.01mph.
RGB class A.........1.14.09...... 94.08mph.

Hi Dear oh dear you have Gone all serious jon.
If you want to get serious. An rgb class c is on a par with a std 2.o zetec. And a 250 bhp cec is on a par with a hyabusa Ect.
I think the fact is that if the car is that weight by the time you have put a driver in it also. It would be better suited to a cec that a bec.
Cheers matt

BHP sells engines, Torque wins races.
I love the sound of the BEC's but i also love the feel of big torque available low down in any gear.
sometimes you don't have the chance to drop a couple of cogs, thats when a light car with good torque does it better.

3k will get me a brand new zetec, jenvey thottle boddies, omex ecu, raceline sump, fuel pump, swirl pot etc...
Will be a great baseline to work one, if i could add some cams i'd be pushing 200bhp, and not rev my ears to bits to pull away from the
copuntless number of traffic lights here in cheltenham.
More i think about it, the more i may stay with the zetec idea, sorry BEC guys, i guess i will stay a CEC.
Maybe a nice indy or avon in the future though for track use.

650kg is quite heavy for a zetec locost...
My Fury with windscreen, full weather gear and carpets only came in about 630kg on the local weighbridge...

3k will see you into Duratec territory where 200bhp is far easier to achieve...

The Cat uses the full rear Sierra sub frame so it's screwed with weight from the start.

But i like the exhaust on the passenger side so it doesnt burn my ears...or legs, plus i have all the zetec bits like exhaust manifold, water piping
in place.
With a ducratec i was told i would spend £300 on a starter, £300 on a bellhousing etc...
The majority of the cost in that 3k is the TB's and Omex, which is regardsless of the engne type.

Wouldn't you get an s2000 honda lump in for £3k? £1500-2000 for donor engine with ecu and keys etc then the rest for exhaust and fitting?
beware, I've got yellow skin

Dave, where in Cheltenham are you (just out of curiousity)_ and what colour is your car?
How about a Vauxhall XE? Exhaust on the passenger side, cheap to buy, make very good power... And for throttle bodies, why not go down the bike T/B
route - that should save you a fair bit of wonga.
I just kind help thinking £3k is a lot for a Zetec engine that wont even make 200bhp!

Hi if using the VX lump it would also mean that an ecu was not required as a dizzy can be retained. It also comes with quite a bit of torque as well.
Would be the easiest way to a 200 bhp setup.
Wheres NSDEV he will give you the low down on the VX as he has a fondness for them.
cheers matt
