r1 power

Hi everyone I was at MK on saturday and it was great to chat to people about there kits and go out in one or two..

I ordered a deluxe kit straight away..

and opted for an R1 engine, going for one of the early carbed engines for simpler wiring etc and low down grunt
.

as it will be my first build..
wanted a bit more power than a firebalde and the R1 seemed a popular choice etc
for the money!

has anyone else fitted an r1 engine to there bec if so got any tips hints..

anything really ?

was it what you expected when you first took it out?

come on tell me anything about

Bloody so excited I am I even went and bought a house this week..
with a GARAGE:coolthats all I was bothered about my girlfriend can have the house)!

thanks
chris

Good choice it will definitely be fast enough for you....

Regarding your comment on low end grunt, the best engine from that perspective is the 02-03 injected engine, its much smoother through the midband. Having said that, I take on board the fact that carb'd is simpler to wire up, its a good choice and will be cheaper than an injected model. Go for a 2000-2001 engine if you can, its mechanically stronger in the clutch/gearbox area and has improved ECU mapping over the 98'99 model.

As for top tips :-

1) Junk the AIS system and the exup motor, both not needed.
2) Fit a sump baffle if you are thinking of going on a track, also overfill oil by about 250ml
3) Beef up the clutch with an extra spring plate (or fit a barnett clutch conversion)
4) Get a good 4-2-1 exhaust system made, it will increase power by around 10hp if you get it right.
5) Look at this web site www.striker.r-one.co.uk/ its a bible for a would be builder

Hope that helps

Paul

AIS = Air Injection System. It bleeds air into the exhaust to reduce emmissions. Fitted to 2000 bikes and onward

EXUP. Exhaust baffle thing which is supposed to improve the midrange. Some people opt to keep the motor as removing it upsets the CDI or the clocks. I have but I have dumped the valve in the exhaust.

Hi,

Air injection system - it puts air into the exhaust ports to help burn unused fuel

EXUP - a motorised valve in the exhaust to supposedly "help" low end torque. A good exhaust system betters the standard system as you are not constrained by noise regs and emissions...

I recommend you download an R1 service manual (there are several on the web) and buy a haynes manual - the latter is invaluable when you come to do wiring.

Also log into the Yahoo bike-engine-cars forum on Yahoo - full of very knowledgable peopl on BECs. See
