R1 Water Temp Sensor
The recent discussion on the standard R1 water temp sensor location (ie. at the top of the rad and therefore after the thermostat) has got me
thinking that perhaps I should relocate it to before the 'stat. What's the easiest and least involved way of doing this?
I haven't got it in front of me, so is there any scope for tapping an M5 thread to screw a temp sender directly into the 'stat housing
before the actual 'stat?
Alternatively, I've seen some hose inserts which have a thread for screwing a sender in?
I've seen ChrisG's solution but I'd like to avoid welding if poss.

the position depends on the age of the engine, the injection engines already have the sensor on the engine side. check the head there might be
somewhere on there that you can drill and tap to get into the water channels to get the most accurate temp.

The temperature sensor on my 98 R1 has an M10 fine pitch thread. The difficulty with fitting it pre-stat is that there are two pipes leading into the
stat. It might be possible to drill and tap into the thermostat housing.
Remember that on a carbed, the temperature sensor is only for indication purposes and is not used by the ECU. You don't need to fit it at all
really. I just fitted it because it was there and the information might be useful.

On the 00/01 carb model the temp guage is also a fan controller. Although most people fit an overide anyhow.
The heads and cam cover on the 98-01 look very similar to the later 02-03 model with the sensor in the stat. So swapping the thermostat and pipework
may be a possibility. Dont know about the sender outputs but they might be the same.

Sure I understand that the water temp sensor is not used by the ECU on my carbed '99 engine - I just want to get it in the most accurate
position now rather than later.
On my '99 R1 rad there is both a thermostatic switch which controls the fan (I also have manual override switch) and the Yamaha water temp
sender (which I have replaced with my own aftermarket sender).
I just want to know if it's worth moving the water temp sender to a pre-stat position, even if it's purely for me monitoring the temps on
my dash.
I will see how easy it is to tap the stat housing tonight. If not then I'll just leave it i the rad.

I'd leave it in the rad if I was you, as tapping the stat housing is just asking for another potential leak!
It doesn't take long for the stat to open, so I wouldn't really worry that much about it!
