bike starters
zx9 starter, is it constantly engaged? i cant see any way for it to disengage, plus when i kill the engine i can hear a starter sort of sound for a
split second before it stops spinning. Just thought id check!

yea they are always engaged on a one way clutch set up, its normal on some bike to hear that noise u say about its just the engine partially moving
back as it stops against compression.

The starter motors on modern bikes are engaged with the crank or clutch basket via a sprag clutch which isolates the starter from the constant
spinning of the engine.
The sound you can hear is probably a bit of both sprag clutch and starter.

As a side note, thats the reason you need to be quick do dip the clutch if you spin a BEC because if the spin stalls the engine and the crank is
momentarily made to reverse by you travelling backwards, it will take out the starter motor and/or surrounding casing.
