ZX12R Cradle

Engine is in the car and just sorting the position out. The guy thats doing the welding for me has mentioned that he does think it worth having a cradle for it due to the position of the pick up points on the engine.

Currently there is gonna be a lower point which well come from the bottom chassis rail and exhaust side mount which is again straight on the chassis and then im left with the last point which is below the carbs .

Whats is the benefit of having a cradle over just having normal engine mounts of the chassis ?

I can see the need for a cradle on some engines like the R1 due to the pick up points being on the side of the engine but cant on the ZX12-r.

Any thoughts appreciated

Cradle or no cradle, doesn't really make a difference. Ours has a cradle (sort of) but the engine couldn't be lifted out of the chassis with it.

Only thing the cradle does, is make the top rear pickups easier to get to and the engine easier to mount than having fixed pickups.

That was gonna be my next question whether you could lift it out with the cradle.

Thanks for that while you about hellfire i just doing some research on end cans for the zx12-r maybe one which will keep the DB levels down any recommendations ?

I dont know what a ZX12 engine looks like , but a bike engine is designed to be held in place with all its engine mountings.
Bear in mind that unlike a car engine, where to a great extent gravity holds it in its mountings and it is very heavy.
a BEC installation is also going to be pulling/forcing the engine in different planes to which it was designed, and with light alloy casings and shed loads of power, is going to try and twist the engine out of its mountings, and possibly break them in the process.
So my opinion is that you ought to use as many of the mountings possible from the origininal installation, wether that means a cradle or not.
My blade instalation uses 3 of the 4 mountings, I wouldnt fancy it being only 2 of the 4.

Our blade engine used all of the mounting points available, as does the ZX12R. I wasn't suggesting using fewer mounting points

With regard to the exhaust silencer, if the standard can is good enough for Kawasaki it should be OK for us. We are currently in the process of fitting the standard can to reduce noise levels for track days. I'll let you know how it goes.

How are you planning on stopping the exaust from exiting onto the rear wheelarch, if you use a standard can Phil?

I wasnt planning on not using all points either.

I was thinking along the lines of standard exhaust aswell.

With regards to exhaust burning wheel arch why not put a alloy arch protector on it to stop it from burning . Just a though and would save butchering the end can.

Search on EBAY for exhaust and have come across a ZRX1100 exhaust would it make much difference which standard exhaust you go for or do people think that most standard end cans would do.

Probably sound like a numpty but im sure i saw someone on here have a standard R1 exhaust with his ZX12-R engine.

Obviously not research on whether the noise level would be reduce so am guessing it probably would be better to stick with standard ZX12-R exhaust..

You run the risk of gearbox distortion if you dont use the rear upper mounts...
