Which engine to replace Hayabusa???

Hi all, thought I'd throw this open to the crowd....

If I was to remove the 'Busa motor from mine and go for a car engine, which should I go for?? Red top? Zetec? Pinto? Cosworth? Any others?

Not saying I'm going to but it's been a topic for discussion down my way and thought i'd like to get your opinions

Rich.

To get an equivalent power/weight ratio be prepared to spend possibly £5000 or more.

If I were to go for a car engine it'd probably be a Honda S2000 a la Chris Masons' old motor.

Not a case of money no object, it would have to cost no more than i could get from selling the motor and things around it like the loom, exhaust, clocks etc.....

What are your reasons for wanting to change? That may pioint to the right choice of car engine for you.

for example are you after...
lazy torquey cruising - RV8
silly arse turbo power - cosworth

Not sure that I want to change, just wondering which other ways I could get the silly performance i've got with a CEC...not many things gonna match the soundtrack of the 'busa, sounds like a BDA!!!

No, well not the pinto bit anyway

Thought i'd give the CEC guys a chance to sell their case.......

Seriously though, although the BEC perfomance is blistering there must be a way of equalling it through bigger torque - I mean, any car that weighs around half a ton is going to feel quick whatever is powering it surely?? Lets face it, it's the sequential box that gives the BEC a big edge over a CEC, not the power?

As Hellfire says, you're going to struggle to get equivalent performance for the same amount of outlay because IMHO you'd need 220bhp+ in your average CEC to give you equivalent performance, which doesnt usually come that cheaply.

The cheapest to get that kind of power normally aspirated would probably be a Vx red top though Id think, unless you want to go turbo and slightly away from the trodden path with something like a 200SX engine/box, which would give you 200bhp+ for not a lot of money.

Thanks Chris,that's what I'm talking about - 200sx, a bit different...something to think about.

The only thing that irritates me at the moment is the fact that the performance drops when carrying a passenger- which happens quite a lot in this thing, everyone wants a go. Whilst it frightens the smoke out of them - without fail - , I feel myself geeing it on a bit 'cos i know it goes quicker than that....which is why i'm thinking how to get the same performance whoever's in it. Which a CEC ought to do due to torque?

Yes, I know - i could stop taking passengers....before it's suggested!!

Im afraid its not as simple as that, engine torque is irrelevent its torque at the wheels thats important and a bike engine'd car has similar levels of wheel torque as a car engine of similar power.

Having said that you would probably lose slightly less performance with a passenger in a higher powered CEC simply because that person is a lesser percentage of the total car weight, ie 80kgs extra in a 600kg car has less noticable effect than 80kgs in a 450kg car. Either way though it will always be noticably slower with a passenger.

I'd have thought that you can't really get much better than the Busa anyway.

It's got to be the closest to having the best of both worlds - Bike power/weight/gearbox and comparative torque to most normal car engines

An engine with lots of torque is what you need.

Therefore large, with many cylinders (and possibly or blower or two - to make up for the increase in weight you understand)

there is no alternative to more power. You pick a car engine, and lose some of your nimbleness.

If you just want to scare people, pick a high power car engine, ie big turbos etc. Id rather ditch the passangers and stay bec!

Alternatively, a large audi v8 turbo in a 3 seater similar to the macca f1.

Not sure to be honest, I booked on Thursday I think and there was ~10 spaces left, but I know of at least 3-4 more that have booked since then, maybe more.

How about a redtop with a Turbo, otherwise called a C20LET.

As found in Cav and Calibra Turbo's.

Great engine, stock KKK can do you 280bhp with a decent FMIC or just use the standard 204bhp and have a bulletproof engine.

Cost about £1200 for a known good engine, ecu, loom etc.

Add another £100 for a FMIC.

How's about a R1 motor? Makes loads of sense to me.. Hey, I tell you what you can have mine - straight swap if you like!

Wow... how generous am I?

Was thinking of giving it to Fesycresy to alleviate his clutch issues....

Did consider Cossie power when I started building....I believe cooling is an issue though?

Anyone used the vauxhall turbo motor?

Rich.

Not in a locost, but I've had one for 8 years in my Calibra. No issues.

well Hicost has done about 50,000 miles with his 430BHP (now 450 IIRC) Cossie. It hasn't gone up in flames yet!

Cheers,
