Self centring -

'twas noted in the course of a SVA fail... that the car showed no tendency to self centre. Now I've doubled the book castor angle but I'm using mazda mx5 uprights which have zero scrub radius. Will the old toe- out trick trick still work?
I'll try to find a bit more caster anyway (there are some washers I can move about)
It was noted on another thread that BECs are even less likely to self- centre than CECs - is this other people's experience? Weights are 210kg front and 230kg rear (wet - which I'm quite pleased about!!)

Lots of caster angle and, if neccessary, adding a tiny bit of toe-IN is the answer (toe-out will make it very skittish - in this part of the world, even the slightest hint of toe-out will get your car taken off the road if it gets inspected!). How much caster do you have now?

toe out and lower tyre pressures so the tyres drag a bit..

Then reset to normal after SVA

Toe out and RAISING the tyre pressures worked for me.

Your best bet is to spend one evening tring all permutations and then youll be able to get it so that YOU feel it self centering.

Mine uses Sierra hubs BTW which will change the reaction (scrub etc)

Any changes that you do to get through the retest may not be the most suitable alterations for every day driving once youve got it on the road.

Toe out and skittishness during the SVA are not a problem. The problem is getting the MAC certificate, then registration and then setting up the car so that you enjoy it when youre driving it.

It might not be very nice driving it to (or trailering it (or for the examiner)) during the SVA but the objective as far as I'm concerened at this point of your build is to PASS SVA, then get it registered and only then can you concentrate on setting it up for enjoyment on the road. Until youve passed the SVA you do not have a 100% road worthy car.
