5EG - what model is this?

I've been swapping my engines over an I noticed that the new one has a much shorter shift shaft. I took them both off to swap them over because my cable mounts don't line up for the shorter one. I noticed that they are exactly the same but for two things. The shaft (and cover) are longer on one which is marked 5EG. the smaller one is marked 4XV.

4XV is a 1998 model R1. What is 5EG?

I found out today that 1999 engines have a longer shift shaft than 1998 engines.
