i have a carb 1993 893cc blade, I beleive you can easily fit a 5 degrees ignition advance gadget to give more power, can anyone recomend it & if so what sort of power or responce benefit will I get for my £50

In theory you should only get a power increase if either:

The advance is not set correctly as is

Or

You move to a higher octane fuel

I think that is right. I'm sure someone will correct me if not.

Depends on the motor itself..

A lot of japanese bikes are setup for very low octane fuel, so you can get away with using an advancer which improve on bottom end..

However, you have to listen to the engine for the signs of preignition and/or detonation and if it appears shift to higher octane fuel or your old timing..

I have one on my zx12r, but I am running 100 octane fuel here in cyprus £0.538 a litre

Advancing ignition (up to a point) increases the power output of the engine for a given volume of air and fuel by allowing the combution products to push on the piston for more of its stroke. In theory you should advance the ignition to the point where further advance would produce no gain in torque because you're pushing the piston backwards (a bit) during the compression stroke so neutralising any gains in the power stroke. In practice, low octane ratings in fuel causes problems before this.

As has already been stated, bike engines are tuned to run on low grade fuel (My R1 will aparently run happily on 91 RON) so running on standard 95 RON fuel would allow you room for a bit of ignition advance. Running 97 RON super unleaded gives even more room.

it is also worth pointing out that you can lose some top end in some cases..

For this you then need a retarder box, that normalises the advance at higher rpm
