R1 Sandwich plate / oil filter relocator

I want to fit an oil pressure and temp gauge to my 5PW R1 engined Fury.

Hopefully a single 52mm gauge that shows both (am considering a SPA dual digital gauge if feeling flush but not the easiest thing to read at a glance - but it does have alarm outputs so you can light up a massive LED cluster when pressure drops below X psi).

Anyway I don't really want to drill and tap anything to fit the sender(s) (SPA uses a single sensor for both temp and pressure IIRC?)

At the same time I thought I might move the oil filter so its easier to change, so a remote oil filter kit that has oil temp / pressure sender holes in it fits the bill (I fitted one of these to my 200SX).

Sooo 3 questions:

1) What are the most common sender threads for say SPA or ETB?

2) Where's the best place to buy a kit from, on Rob C's page he got one from ThinkAuto like this:

I'm sure I read a post a couple of days ago that listed somewhere decent to get these sort of bits cheaper... RalDes?

3) Orientation of the filter. On my 200SX the GReddy relocation kit put the filter so it was vertical with the hole at the bottom. I didn't like this but couldn't easily change it. The filter seemed to drain completely when the engine stopped so when you started it the oil pressure light took longer to go off so probably causing more wear when starting. It also made it messy when changing the filter as you can imagine. Guess I'll try and keep it in the same orientation.

I've used a Spa dual electronic gauge on my R1 engined single seater. The gauge also powers an LED cluster (red / green) so that low oil pressure or high oil temperature light up the red section (the green is shift light) so I can then check the gauge.

There's a photo on my web site here . Have a look at the Electrics page.

The sensors are separate for oil temperature (in the sump) and oil pressure (tapped into the big bolt). Have a look here

lsdweb,

Looking at your photos it looks like they supply a separate oil temp and pressure sender. On the SPA Digital Dash I had a while back it was one unit for both with 4 spade connectors.

Incidentally they've got 10% off everything til the end of the month. Still not cheap but its good quality stuff with useful features like having the alarm outputs.

Incidentally thats the exact same LED cluster I've got (somewhere in the garage - may end up buying another one).

IIRC it was going to be a pain to make it light the 3 different colours it can do due to how it worked. I thought I was going to have to make up a basic circuit to get it to do what I wanted.

Was yours the same (I may be mixing it up with another cluster). Does yours do red, green and "orange" (both red and green on together I think).

What temps and pressure have you got the alarm set for out of interest - do you ever see it come on during a track session?

I was going to do it all off the take offs that the oil filter relocator kit would provide (once I figure out what size and threads etc I need).

Hi hobbsy

There's been quite a debate on here about positioning of oil temperature senders - I decided the sump was as good a place as any!

I bought the gauge second hand from Pat (Avoneer) on this site at reduced cost but it's good quality. I haven't quite set the parameters but it's dead easy to change.

My cluster (Maplins) does orange - which means I'm at 11,500 rpm anoil pressure is low!!! Orange is not a good colour!!

With that sandwich plate you might find that it fouls slightly with a 5PW.

I fitted mine with the engine in place and thought it was all sealed until I filled the engine with oil and it went all over my garage floor.
iirc it needs a file taken to one edge just to get it past a corner on the block.

I would take a photo and show you but i'm nowhere near the car just now.

I'm probably going to relocate the filter so it will actually take up less space, but are you talking about the face that seals against the block not having enough room rather than the added depth of a sandwich plate?

Either way a photo would be good when you have time.

Where the sandwich plate seals against the block.

I can't do a photo for about 5 weeks when I actually get back from work.

iirc. it's around 2 o'clock on this picture where i had some trouble with it
