Engine problem
I've just been out doing some exhaust noise measurements. On the last one, the revs only dropped to 5000. I checked the throttle and choke
cables - OK. The carb slides and throttle butterflies were OK. I was only 2 miles from home so I drove back. It would drive along with no throttle
pedal and would rev up if I decluched. Once I got home, I checked everything again and it all looks OK. after 10 minutes of letting it cool down, I
started it again and the same thing happened - it reved up to 4500.
What am I likely to have done?
99 - 101 dB 0.5m from the tailpipe, 94 - 95 dB 0.5m from everywhere else around the car BTW.

Could you have a split/loose carb rubber.
As already said a vacuum leak is one possibility.

Check that none of the carb balancing screws have dropped out. It's most probably an air leak.

I've just gone over the carbs. All the seals to the head are OK. All of the slide rubbers / slides / needles are OK as are the choke valves.
The idle air jets are still blocked correctly and I checked one of the float bowls an all is OK.
The engine idles really high, even with the idle adjust screw turned clear away from the throttle, though you can lower the engine speed
slightly by pushing on it. More worryingly, the engine will start with the idle mixture screws only a 1/4 turn out and the engine still runs
at high speed with them turned in all together. The engine can be slowed by putting the palm of a hand accross one or more of the carb inlets.
Occasionally it can be made to stall too.
Where can it be getting its fuel from? would it run on engine oil (OK so I'm a bit desparate here)? Something must be badly wrong.
