R1 engine dismanling question
When removing the crank from an R1 engine, do you have to remove the cylinder head and clutch basket as the manual says? The clutch seems to bolt
onto the gearbox and I don't plan to disturb that. I'm just wondering if there's some other reason why I would have to.

You will have to split the cases and there may be something behind the clutch basket that links across the two halves, like a plate or something.

Tough luck, sounds like bad news - did you discover the cause of your noise or still looking?

flakes of what looks like copper foil in the bottom of the sump make me think crank or big end bearings, which is why I need to split the crank
cases.
There's nothing behind the cluch basket as far as I can see, except the plate that holds the gearbox main shaft in place. I don't think
you need to take the clutch off, I just wondered if anyone knew.

you dont need to take the head off to split the crank case. you do need to to take just about every thing else off though.
you need to get to a few tricky bolts to enable the crank cases to be seperated. a couple of them are behind the generator which can be a complete
b@st@rd to remove. make sure you have a big bolt with the correct thread and pitch (something like 16mm with 1mm pitch) to wind into the generator.
you need to remove the generator bolt first to allow access to the other threaded part of the generator.
clutch needs to be out as there are some bolts to be found around this area.
I took the cams out on the first engine I stripped and I seem to remember that I didnt need to do that, although there are some bolts in the timing
chain casing that I needed to remove. I was removing the gearbox so I had to split the crank cases but also some other bolts as well.
Just bear in mind to make a not where all the bolts come from when splitting the crank. there are 20+ bolts to remove and some are different thread,
some are the same thread but different lengths, some are the same thread same length but different amounts of threaded part.
good luck,
best advice is to buy the haymes R1 manual, it comes in very handy
cheers

I've just taken apart my old engine, or spares as I now call it. You don't need to remove the clutch basket to split the crank case
halves but you do if you want to remove the water pump chain and guard from the lower crank case half.
