Engine Stalled, difficulty re-starting
The engine stalled yesterday and was really hard to get re-started.
My day ran as follows:-
Woke up early at Stoneleigh, in the rain, started car ok (after a few attempts), drove back to Newcastle (230 miles) in three hour long stints, with a
15 min stop to refuel - stretch legs etc in between each stint.
Most of the way home it was dry, with occasional heavy showers. Most of the journey at a steady 70-75 mph (officer), which is around 7,200 rpm in
top.
Came off the motorway in Gateshead, and drove through town. All the way along the High Street the engine seemed to be hunting? As I stopped at
lights, the revs would drop below normal idle and almost stall, just picking up at the last second.
Until the last set of lights, when it stalled and wouldn't re-start on the button. Check of the dials and no high temps or other unusual
things.
After about 2 - 3 minutes it fired up again, and drove the last 3 miles home fine.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
Fuel? Ignition? Flat Battery? or Plugs sooting up?
Engine is a ZZR1100 on standard Kawk ignition and carbs (re-jetted), using NGK Iridium plugs.
Thanks
Mike

Wow, thats dedicated Indy driving!
Sorry to hear about the prob though Mike, it sounds like an air leak to me - if its wanting to stall but picks up at the last minute it could be that
the long distance and all the vibes have caused the carbs to maybe slip or a pipe has come off?
Also - I have heard of bike engines that vibe their plugs loose although its not happened to me!

sounds like something overheated thats why after 3 mins it started up fine as u said (because it probably cooled down)... plugs overheating? maybe
wires?

The 2.9 in my donor car does exactly the same thing. Iv tried cleaning the plugs and everything else i can think of but it still does it.
Would love to know the cause of yours.
P.S isn't 7200 rpm at '70-75 mph' a bit high?

BEC, so 7200 rpm isnt realy that much

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but its sinking, Racing around to come up behind you again, the sun is the same in a relative way but
your older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death

ahem
slight attempt to mislead here,
I was doing 70 mph on the way home officer (which in real life equates to 6,500 rpm).
However I was in 5th which equates to 70 mph at 7,200 rpm.
I thought giving an accurate engine speed was more important than my speed
Cheers
Mike

What he said. My blade engine had the exact same symptoms. It was an air leak around the carbs. Temporarily cured by bigger zip ties

I had this on a tintop when the carb iced up. After acouple of mins it'd melt and the car would start again. It gave the hunting feeling as well
only it was because it was flooding itself.
Don't know much about bikes though so none of this might be of any use to you.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.
