R! oil presure gauge

I've seen presure pickups in the oil cooler bolt and sandwich plate behind the filter but the service manual shows it tested from the oil gallery plug (below the alternator/above bottom hose). Has anybody used this for a perminent presure gauge pickup?

I have thought about using this too. I haven't removed the plug, but perhaps it is easier on the oil cooler as the bolt is already hollow and the plug isn't?

the oil gallery bolt is just an M8 cap head. It would be much easier if you could get an M8 pressure gauge pipe than drilling and tapping the oil cooler bolt but does such a thing exist?

The oil cooler bolt sees pressure directly from the pump where the oil gallery is in the head I'd have thought the head would be a better place to measure the pressure just in case there's a small leak up at the top somewhere.

The oil gallery is low down on the side of the block. The gallery comes directly off the pump and feeds the crankshaft.
It is the recognised test point according to the manual for getting an accurate oil pressure.
As for M8, it is probably going to be 1.25mm pitch as well!

M8 x 1.25mm would be handy size, you could modify a standard bolt

I've just had a look as my spare 4XV crank case and there is no bolt on the lower crank case half. The oil galleries have 2 big plugs bunged into them. You could perhaps drill and tap them but that would be harder than drilling the removable oil cooler bolt.

On the 05 engine there is an allen head bolt.
Replacement with a hex type would be better.
1.25mm is not a standard size.

Later engines must be different as mine definatly has an allen key plug in as described in the manual. Think I'll get a gauge and try it.

I know the one you mean and I use that for my oil pressure as it is the main gallery and feeds the crankshaft. '06 R1.
If it is good enough for Yamaha to check the pressure it is good enough for me.

I used a sump plug (M16x1.5 I think) and then drilled and tapped to 1/8th NPT for the pressure fitting because I couldn't find an adaptor at the time. You can use either side of the block as it goes all of the way through. Demons 2007 cat has adaptors on pg 218 item 15. I will double check the size tomorrow in case you need it.

Had another look at the engine today. Don't think the M16 is the one Yamaha use. There's a smaller one just to the right of it which they use.

Hi Adrian

My engine is the 5VY. I just checked the manual again and it looks like the larger one (big silver bung) is what they use. The smaller one to the right just goes into the case. I just removed it from my old blown up engine and it goes nowhere. I can tell because number one rod made a big hole in the casing right next to it and I can stick the allen key through and see it on the other side. One advantage of having a blown engine I guess. I am now using an '06 engine and decided to use this point so that I know the pressure in the main gallery.

Hi Guys

Does anybody have a photo of where you've fitted your oil pressure sensor into the block. I've just upgraded from a 5JJ to a 5VY. I haven't got a manual for it yet and I haven't worked out what's what yet!.

I drilled the bolt on the 5JJ but the flexi hose came a bit too close to the exhaust for my liking - I melted the loom once!

Does the 5VY have a take-off on the head just above exhaust port 1 (or 4 depending on which way you look at it!)? On the 5PW there's a bolt in the head which supposedly goes into an oil gallery, although its fairly close and directly above the exhaust port so you'd need to shield it and make damn sure its not going to spring a leak!

There's an M16 plug with (allen key) on each end of the block. Same plug each end so you can't miss them. Take your pick which one suits you best.

It's also an M6 bolt and a real pig to sort if the adapter you use to take the oil pressure snaps off in the head.

Grrr!
