05 R1 turbo conversion

Hi all,

been doing a trawl of the archives about fitting a Turbo to the 05 Yamaha R1 thats going in my Tiger B6. Now i have yet to build the car and still in the very early stages with chassis mods ongoing so havent positioned my engine yet.
Having looked at a couple of pictures it looks like i may need to shorten the passenger footwell (looking at the MK ZX10R turbo on Youtube in particular). Is this correct???
Also, is anyone doing a kit of parts for the home builder at all - manifolds, plenum chamber etc??
Any pointers about the way to go with this?? I do like to make things difficult and i'm sure some people will say build it with the R1 as standard first. Problem with the Tiger is the one piece carbon tub is not going to be easy to repair or replace (not to mention very expensive) if i chop a big hole for the 4-2-1 manifold so i'd rather go Turbo straight away and turn the boost pressure right down for starters.

Has anyone got any pics of an R1 turbo install??

Cheers
Paul

come on Paul , whats taken so long, you only had the engine to fit, the wiring to do, all body work to fit, the plumbing, all the light work, and not forgetting interior to fit, i thought you might be nearly there, by the way, that zx of yours, it really flies.

Hi Brad,

Glad to hear you are loving the ZX9R mate. I kinda got held up by not having an exhaust to fit the engine in the right place and MK were taking ages so have done a load of other jobs in the mean time. All this talk of turbo's got me thinking so figured why not - especially if its going to require chassis mods before i paint the chassis and build it up. All the panelling is done and removed now so just got to decide turbo yay or nay before i go any further or ask MK about a set of manifolds. New job may be a deciding factor this week as it'll be paying for the upgrades.

If its the turbo mk i found on on youtube, the one in the factory, the kit isn't that great!

They are not running an intercooler and in a car with all that room there really is no excuse.

High comp engines like that require the coolest charge temps you can achieve to remain det free.

Even at low boost pressures the air will be leaving that compressor at over 100 degrees C.

I saw the thread you started regarding putting together a turbo kit. Did you get any further with this at all?? Would seem to make more sense to look at the more modern engines now the prices of newer R1's and ZX10R's are coming down.
Having done a bit of reading i was wondering about the temperatures and if it was required to change ignition timing etc with an aftermarket ECU. Also if an Aquamist system is likely to help improve reliability and so on but once again this starts bumping the cost up.
Seems to me like utilising a commonly available intercooler and standard ECU if possible would be the way forward. Then again a Power Commander isnt cheap so is there a case for going to a Megasquirt etc??
Sorry for the newbie questions / comments.

so has anyone got any ideas on whether the standard ECU / injectors / Power Commander with a suitable fuel pump / regulator can supply sufficient fuel for a turbo'd 04-06 R1???
Also, where have you guys with Turbo BEC's gone for plenum chambers / manifolds etc etc.
Anyone got any pics of turbo instalations at all??

Been wondering about the manufacture of an exhaust manifold for a turbo motor - how important is the design with regard to free flow as opposed to a normally aspirated?
