Anyone know of any good methods to measure the exact center of a steering rack? (on the case)

its more important to get the knuckles equal distance from centre when the wheels are pointing ahead, having the rack housing off centre will just affect the amount of lock you have in either direction. Having the housing accurate to a few mills is fine in my books, in which case id spin it both ways, measure to a specific point on the housing, then work out the halfway point. Line up with the centre of the chassis. Voila. Much harder to get the knuckles spaced right.

Depends exactly what you want......

For bump steer you need to make sure the ball joints at the end of the rack are centred. You need to take off the boots and measure the pivots to the suspension mounts or reference everything from a centreline of the car.

To find the centre of travel, count the turns of the wheel.


I have a special marking piece on my pinion that enables me to centre the rack dead easy everytime. It makes tracking so much easier.

OK thanks, I was hoping there was a trick - i'll just pull the boots back with the steering centered and find the midpoint...
