Lengthening Shifter Cables

Howdy from sunny Phoenix.

I have decided to place my shifter further forward and higher up than the original MR2 cables allow for. (Seen the latest shifter position on the new Civic SI? It comes out of the dash.) In addition, the engine is now further back in it's relationship to the driver than original MR2. I need another 2 or 3 feet of length to reach my target location.

What are my options? Low cost first please! I am not afraid to fabricate! Thanks for all the help -in advance.

Seeing as today is Christmas... HO HO HO - -M'eeeery Christmas!

Can either or both ends of the inner cable be lengthened by attaching a rod, and clamping the outer x distance away?
I'm not aware of any suitable (read: cost effective over new cables) extenders available comercially.

Steve, I looked at some and they seem to fall in the 30/40 dollar range.

e.g.

I agree cheaper would be nicer.

Taking Bob's idea further, it sounds like you may be doubling the distance, so how about 2 sets of cables joined end to end?

That's one hell of a long vehicle!
How much longer than an MR2 is it gonna be?

How do the cables from a MK2 MR2 compare as that car is slightly bigger?

Longer car? No.

The car itself is not longer. I am placing the passenger compartment further forward and mounting the shifter itself in a position that is more like a rally car position. Very close to the steering wheel and at an angle to the dash. I should be done with the mounting structure (or maybe I will model it in 3DS Max) and then I will post an image...
