Wanted: new Zetec 2.0 engine
Looking for a new Zetec 2.0 engine. Silver or Blacktop.
Have tried all the usual suppliers and cheapest I can find is £900 delivered. Anyone able to better that?

When you say new do you know that the last ones where made around 2004/5?
Crate engines available now have been sitting on shelf's for over 10 years. Silvertops stopped way back in the early 90's so finding one
of them would be a task!
What's your goal? All brand new parts for a current reg??

Yeah, maybe "new" is the wrong phrase - "unused" then.
Nah, just replacing my silver-top which rattles a bit at the top end and smokes a bit at idle. Just fancy starting from a fresh engine rather than
taking a risk with an unknown second hand unit. The unused engines seem reasonably cheap, and will only ever get more expensive the longer I leave
it.
Could also be open to any low-mileage 'good' used engine though.

Im pretty sure ford outsourced their production (and still do) to a subsidiary (powertrain maybe?). You can still buy genuine crate engines online.
If production had halted 11 years ago these would have dried up a long time ago.

Have a look at the crate engines. They have an 04 build number on the front of the cam belt cover.
Aren't they required by law to hold spares for 10 years, hence the flood of new old stock the year before last ?

If your looking at buying other parts i got a deal via Raceline, good discount on the engine quoted price, although that was 3 years ago...

Retro ford are a bit cheaper at £850, i got a replacement new block from cgb motorsport, at that time they were £500+delivery for a complete engine
but i don't think they sell them anymore, but it might be worth a ring.
I would fit a new cambelt to these engines, the original belt may not have been used but will have deteriorated and weakened.
The factory oil that is in these engines is also very odd stuff being a vivid green and fluorescing orange like uv dye, i assumed it was used for dyno
testing the engine during production and leak testing, and not intended for further use.
My replacement block is marked 10/04 in the castings, ford had a large surplus of these engines at the end of focus production.
Ford used to sell off this kind of end of line stock via their trade club, there used to be quarterly lists of end of line stock sent round at prices
you wouldn't believe.

So no blacktop zetec will have anything later than 04?

you would need a cat for IVA all but the oldest silvertops as well.

Is your car already registered without a cat?
It the answer is yes then the newer engine makes no difference to your future emissions tests - it only needs to meet the same standard as it did on
the day of its IVA test.
If its not registered yet then it would mean you need a cat for the IVA. (and for every MOT from then on too...)

Keep in mind the age of these 'new' engines means that they should really have a new cam belt fitted before you run them - a few folk have
found this out the hard way
Also don't completely discount the 1.8's - with the 2.0 cams they are even meant to make about the same power as the 2.0 with a little
less torque of course.
But they can be a bit cheaper and have a lighter flywheel as standard. (of course you can put a 1.8 flywheel on a 2.0 to try and get the best of both
worlds)

That's a good point. I had a 1.8 BT before my 2.0 and despite being fairly knackered it was a sweeter revving engine, with little difference in
power and that was on 1.8 cams.

I talked to GBS and managed to get a crate 2.0 blacktop for £825 collected. Had to buy some other bits though. Raceline were willing to do one for
£810 but they were too far for me to collect.
