I'm estimating completion of my build in about a month, and my local SVA station is quoting only a week or so wait - If I submit my SVA1 now, will I be able to choose a date a month away? or will I just be assigned one?

They assign one but IIRC there's nothing to stop you postponing it and then agreeing a date with them providing you postpone within 72hrs of the first date.

i was told to put any date you like near to the time you will be ready, then when you get the call you can alter the date well thats what nottingham said

I asked for a specific date. They offered me one two days before, I asked if I could have the one I initally requested and they said yes.

Whether or not it was a fluke that they offered me one so near the date I wanted I don't know....

They may only do 2 tests per day, morning and afternoon. If your chosen day is fully booked, they can't give you what you want. You could give your chosen test centre a ring. They're very helpful, unlike the DVLA.

I put a date on about 4 weeks in advance and got the exact date.
Normally tests are in the morning and retests in the afternoon. If they offer one earlier it's because they have a slot to fill but chances are if you need a particular date and it's free you'll get it.

As above they're a lot easier to deal with than DVLA

It says on the application what date would you like the test. Put when u want it in there. You can change it if they dont give you when u want.

Calling the local station just gets forwarded to the main call centre

I've had a great service from Nottingham test center,when I phoned them I got put through to their examiners who answered any questions and explained how long the waiting list was,I applied for the test about a couple of weeks ago,they phoned me with about a week later date but then changed it to the date I wanted which is in a couple of weeks,they said as long as there is a slot in the diary I can pick any date.

Sorry to resurect on old post, but how far in advance can you book?

I want my SVA in March, but guess that will be a very busy month due to IVA in April. Can I book it now?
