I've heard on the grapevine that it is possible to SVA without any white lights (i.e. headlights) however its obviously illegal if caught driving
at night.
Does anybody know if this is still the case?
I will, of course, be fitting headlights, but want to get my car sva-able as quickly as possible, so shortcuts are greatly appreciated.
so how do you pass the part of the SVA where they test your headlights?
As the beam pattern is tested as well as the lights inspected to ensure they are compliant I can't see how to get a MAC without having hadlights
fitted.
You used to be able to have a daylight only MOT where there was no requirement for lights. But I dont know if you still can?
You definately need them for SVA though.
There are no shortcuts when it comes to SVA, the inspectors have seen it all before, if you want to pass make sure you do the best job you can from
the start....

I think you misinterpret what I mean by "shortcuts".
One shortcut, for example, is not fitting carpet. This is something I definitely want in my completed car but it is something I can forego for SVA.
I'm by no means suggesting I roll a half finished, non-compliant vehicle into the test centre and I only ask about the headlights issue to try
and confirm/deny something I have been told.

The Ariel Atom only has headlights as a cost option. They must manage some how.

sorry you've completely lost me. you asked a question about the feasability of passing SVA without headlights.
I replied saying headlight postion, type and beam setting were checked.
ABS and an alarm aren't statutory requirements, headlights are.
If you're looking for things you can leave off and fit after but still pass SVA then how about a reversing light or horn.

Position lamps, etc. are OBLIGATORY for SVA.
MOT is a whole different ball-game!
Is there something about Dax lights that are different? Reason I'm asking is there should be a cheaper SVA alternative than £200.
Couldn't you find a cheaper set either second hand etc just for sVA then sell them on if they aren't asthetically what you're after?
Also could you try and utilise more bits off a donor purely for SVA such as the instruments etc withy a makeshift MDF dash then take your time
building the one you want with the guages you want once it's all tested?
leave off any screen to avoid all the washer wiper hassle as well.

I don't think anyone here has tried (or if they did they didn't post about positive/negative results - which implies negative to me).
The only way to find out in any official manner is to call your local SVA centre and ask them politely. The do answer questions over the phone and
are generally helpful - it saves their time and long arguments at the test.
I think the answer is no, but even if you could that would mean some kind of daylight only SVA (same as the MOT mentioned) which would mean doing IVA
if you ever wanted to fit them in the future. If that wasn't the case no-one would fit them (same as windscreens)
One thing is lights are mandatory when it's raining not just when it's dark so you'd have to stop if there was a shower - rather more
inconvenient (not to mention breaking down on the way home as it starts to get dark).
As mentioned there are much cheaper options than £200 for lights, a full set (front and back) of really good quality lights are around that from SVC.

Think my head lamps campe for a third part Company like Safford Vehiicles.
Cost about 40 quid each.. and have build in side lights. Only think was they were dipped ofr continent. but rotating the lenses 10deg's sorted
that.
i thought the daytime only test was for bikes. I've not seen a car driving around anywhere (production or kit) without headlights. I have seen a
few motorbikes in the summer without lights though.
i think for MOT, they're on the basis of, if they're not there, they can't be tested. I've seen 'road legal' (we know
how legal some bikes can be... ) bikes with race fairing, so not even a hole to put a light in
basically, it seems it was ok for bikes to get day time only MOTs, but not cars. i don't even know if bikes can still do it though

Slightly less than the 200 quid. Get one of the nice guys on here over and fit them and then you don't need to worry about it any more...
If you didn't fit headlights you'd still need brake lights and indicators. Seeing as you're running wires to each corner of the car
anyway you may just aswell run some extra wires for the headlights.
I see what you mean by the extra cost but when you compare it to the extra work you'd need to carry out after SVA it doesn't work out.
If you submit a car without headlights you can't even have a headlight switch, fuse or relay. You can't just remove the lights, there has
to be nothing there.
That is of course assuming that you can submit without lights, If I were you I'd call the SVA center and ask to speak to a tester because it
seems a bit of a grey area.
Try
for the shells @ £36 &
for the light units @£24 with combined postage of £8 comes to a grand total of
£68. You could always take them off & sell on again if they are not to your or Dax's standard. But to your original point, can't find
the link but I 100% certain they do have to be fitted.
