I need to dispose of my sierra shell, however I need to keep the v5, vin and number plates. Is it just as simple as phoning up a scrappy to come and collect the shell or do I need to contact dvla/vosa. Also will there be a problem because the shell doesn't have any vin's.

I had the car on a SORN, took off all the ID plates (including the chassis floor stamp) and got the scrappy to collect FOC.

I also kept the engine behind the shed just in case and only disposed of it after my car was registered.

I wouldn't let the DVLA know you've scrapped the shell !

One option is to put it on a trailer, take to a scrap merchant (place where they weigh in steel, not car scrap yard) and get a few beers for it. After you have driven in and had your 'rig' weighed, they should have a machine to lift it off the trailer. You then drive back over weigh bridge. They will then work out what they owe you. Ive heard scrap is back up to £100 a ton so you might get 50 quid or so.

Those guys arent bothered about the numbers as it is just a lump of steel to them. And seeing as you arent doing anything wrong there isnt a problem. It is just the car scrap yards that are supposed to take paperwork off you to register the car as scrapped, however you will be doing that bit once car is through test and being registered with DVLA.

No, your average scrappy is'nt goint to care, and some will understand.
Correctly you need those things even when the shell has gone. You also need to keep it SORNEd if it is registered until you give the V% etc to the DVLA at the inspection, or when they ask for it!

i stripped my donor ata mates garage and dumped the shell in his skip. He got the cash in exchange for helping me strip the shell.

The only problem with trailering is that im 22 so can't legally pull a trailer. I do have a flatbed transit that is +1ft and a forklift so that might be an option.

I'm only querying it as my mechanic said I may encounter problems down the line.

As long as you keep the V5 and it is correctly sorned you wont have a problem. Keep the shell id just in case. I doubt the DVLA people will expect everyone to keep a scrap shell. I kept the old number plates and vin tags but they werent needed.

Keeping the donor SORNed is the key bit to avoid hassles. this is just a paperwork exercise.

Don't leave any identifying numbers (including the number plates) on the shell and take it to a scrap metal rather than scrap car place.

Don't tell the DVLA you've scrapped the shell, they'll kill the V5 their end so you'll probably be put on a Q plate.

The scrapyards will all report the car scrapped to the DVLA if they find a number they can use to ID. The police push hard to make them do that IIRC from previous posts on the subject. The idea is to try and track down ringing/steal and strip gangs.

Darren's plan is good but I would also attach lot and lots of containers or bin bags full of water to the trailer where they canot be seen then burst them before the weigh-in on exit.

Remove all identifying numbers and stick it on e-bay for spares and collection only. That way you get to keep the V5 until you register your kit and you might be surprised at how much it sells for.
