Who could I ask, or does someone definetley know, whether side exhausts are allowed with the new IVA ?
Cheers.
From what i hear, side exhausts are Deffinately allowed, it just might mean that you need some sort of cage over it. The propsed new rule is just to
protect anyone hurting themselves on the hot exhaust. If it goes ahead, we will need some sort of cage to stop people accidentally touching it, if it
doesnt - nothing changes.
I am just dealing with ordering a side exhaust, and this isnt changing my mind.

panic about nothing
what’s so hard about fitting a simple heat shield to an exhaust???????
IIRC even the first locost in the book had one on the silencer (was that the one made form a washing machine?), so what if you need some more further
up. Probably what will be sold soon will be double skinned exhaust systems with insulation between the skins.

The draft that I read said that no part of the exhaust systems, including headers, collectors, catalytic converter, silencer or tailpipe could come
into contact with the 10cm sphere.
So protection would need to cover the entire sidepipe system, including the headers as they emerge from the bonnet - something the usual guards do not
do.
I would simply wrap the headers, collector and cat in heatwrap, but this might cause its own issues.

No you're missing the point.
There was talk about completely banning side exit exhausts, not just making covers.
But I want to know if it's 'internet talk' or in the draft.
I must admit that the hot pipe is a worry for me sometimes - when a young kid comes over to look at the car, or my neighbour's new puppy is in
the drive and bouncing around - I wouldn't like to see either one get burned.
I should wrap it - but I don't think it looks very good, and keeping the water out may be a problem (risk of rust).
there was a thread on one of the cobra forums that was linked to a short while ago.
Apparently Den Tanner & Nigel Dean have been involved in the consultation and raised this issue.
*Think* the issue with side exhausts has been resolved, but can't remember the details...
Banning side exhausts is rubbish, i know someone very well who has been to the IVA meetings and the only thing that has come up is making us shield the side exhausts.
