How long in peoples experience does it take to get a chassis no. from the DVLA?
I applied to our local office (leeds) about a week ago but I'm nervous as I need to get our paperwork in by the end of feb for the SVA.
saying that do I actually need the VIN for the SVA? or just for registration?
I've just dealt with Leeds DVLA. They insist on doing the inspections first. I handed them the paperwork on a Monday and they offered me an
inspection on the Wednesday. Unfortunately I couldn't make it but I've now had the inspection and got the chassis number the very next day.
Had to take the car up to the VOSA place in Leeds though.
Only slight issue is that the guy there who does all the kitcar stuff left at the end of Jan and had been replaced by a new lad who he was training
when he looked at my car.
I can u2u the number for their inspections team if that helps?
P.S. Yes you do need the VIN for SVA.

I made up my own number and filled in the paperwork,I had no problems doing this the car is now registered and on the road.
Sh*t I had no idea! thanks for that info. If you could send me that number it would be great, I'd better get straight on it.
Are you able to drive the car to that inspection if you have insurance? What are they actually inspecting?

Although I must admit I was a bit worried when I did it.
Just stamp your own number on.
If questioned, tell them that is what was issued to you by the ( Insert car make here) I said Haynes Roadster club.
if it already stamped on the chassis then that's the chassis number.

PS. Don't know why your DVLA need to inspect the car before the SVA.
They are only inspecting it to make sure the details on the MAC match whats on the car..
Chassis number, engine number.
They are only inspecting it to register it for the road.
And they can't do that till it's been SVA'd
I actualy asked if I could get mine inspected before SVA (Maidstone office)
They said No it needs the SVA details to to fill in their forms.

The guy in Leeds (Richard) was supposedly leaving at the end of Jan although I'm not sure if that was literal or a few days either side. Anyway,
he insisted I had their VIN. He knew which kitcar manufacturers stamped their chassis and which didn't. He knew my Indy wouldn't have a
VIN and insisted they supply one. You could try it on but I just didn't want to be stuck having to re-stamp the chassis or worse having a second
SVA/IVA.
At the inspection it depends what reg you're gonna try for I guess.
Q plate - basically just the engine number and owt else with any sort of ID number.
Age related - Make sure all that you've declared is from the donor
New plate - Make sure it's all new/reconditioned.
He effectively did three seperate inspections on mine as he was training the new lad.
In terms of driving it there, afraid not!

They sure do!
No problem with my made up VIN at Swansea or SVA, or Nottingham DVLA. But Nottingham would not register without MoT and refused age plate despite
evidence that all bits came from single donor - my cock-up there, I had all the evidence, photos MoTs, copy of transfer document showing donor
registered in my name, etc, etc but no V5 because I sold the shell! Idiot!

I made up my own number some kit manufacturers issue one that is also on the reciept for the chassis, if you don't do your own or don't have
one issued by kit manufacturer then DVLA will issue one.
DVLA are also looking for a made up plate in some situations so i stamped my VIN number directly on to the chassis in 2 locations and had an engraved
Manufacturers VIN plate rivited in the engine bay. There are also 2 other stamped plates welded on the chassis and covered so they can't be seen
but i know where they are.
Cor its a right minefield this legal bit isnt it!
Im wondering now wether to call them up and tell them to disregard that letter as I've 'found' one already stamped on the
chassis.....or something.... 
Alternatively, do I HAVE to use leeds? I will be having it SVA'd in Chadderton (Manc) so could perhaps do it at the office local to there?
And I thought you didnt need an MOT for the first 3 years? is that just on a Q plate?

I am just getting my paperwork ready for the SVA, I was going to use Leeds but I have had all sorts of trouble trying to get any sense. So I am going to stamp my own VIN number get it through the SVA and worrty about registration after, may decide to use another DVLA office. It makes the legal side so frustrating that every office works differently. Leeds insisted I got an MOT before the SVA

To be honest, I'm not sure that's quite right.
They are checking it to see the parts/receipts to see what age plate you get. New or age-related.
My inspection was (quite sensibly) before SVA .
This gets it out the way and means that as soon as you pass SVA and have a MAC you can go to the DVLA office and get your documents and number plate certificate.
Obviously this was at Wimbledon DVLA but the woman in charge there really knew her stuff and the whole process for me was very smooth.
