Do the DVLA inspect all kit cars before registration?
bigbravedave - 15/5/09 at 11:30 PM

Im puzzled! I've passed sva, when I ordered the forms to register the car (on a new plate) I asked the DVLA call center bod if I needed to present the car to the dvla office, to which he replied no! I filled out the forms and took these into the dvla office in northampton straight from sva with the car on a trailer. They checked all the forms through, took a couple of cheques and said they would aim to turn the forms arround within 72 hours for the registration and 2 weeks for the tax. when I asked them if they needed to see the car as its outside they said they didnt need to.

Has anyone else registered on a new plate without the dvla asking to see the car?

I registered my build on an age related plate in 2004 without anyone from the DVLA ever seeing the car, so yes, it can happen. Seems to depend on the DVLA office and the person you deal with.

Also, in my case they sorted out road tax and registration on the spot. No waiting at all. I was so surprised that I took the trouble to send them a nice letter to say
thanks! I believe it's important to do that when you get good service.

Somebody at Northampton is telling you porkies. Unless they have changed the procedure between SVA and IVA (personally I can't see that they would have) and some one has got very confused about what is needed, that is to say they assume you passed an IVA. Don't worry though, with normal thoroughness the DVLA at northampton is likely to realise that they have made an error and then send you a letter telling you that you need an inspection.
Personally I would give them a ring at northampton DVLA and speak directly to Kelly who is the young lady who handles all our Kit car registation stuff at Northampton. (U2U sent with the direct phone number).

They normally do a check to see
1) you are who you are.
2) visual check on engine number AND chassis number.

Then Numberplate authority, your paper work AND the Tax disc arrive all in one signed for envelope.

When I went there with my paper work I was telling the munchkins behind the glass what the correct procedure was, what paper work they need, what the type of reg I would get. they really DON'T have a clue there.

DVLA didn't want to see my car.

All registered and a plate within an hour.

Didn't want to see my RH at Sheffield, got reg and tax 2 days later. I wonder if there is a difference between Q and age related plates?
