Temporary engine for IVA
Dan. - 29/10/09 at 11:39 PM

Hi All,
I am looking to put a silly engine in my car wut finding the correct partys / donors is taking longer than I would like.
If I were to fit a pinto lump say out of a 1.6 then later convert it to my engine of choice what is legally required? will it need another test of some sort? How will emissions be judged if it was originally registered with a pinto lump etc.

thanking you

Dan

Rules are the same as for any engine transplant. They've recently been tightened up a bit but are still quite easy if you plan ahead.

Here -> http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/ChangesToYourRegistrationCertificate/DG_4022054

Emissions at MOT will be the same levels as the pinto and depend on the registration you get (new, age related or Q)

Looks simple enough, now to look for a cheapo donor engine

i'd thought about this a while back, but depends what you go from and to. you'll most likely need new exhaust, engine mounts, some plumbing, bell housing, perhaps even different length prop shaft.
or you may not, but it could end up more expensive and more hassle than its really worh

Exhaust & mounts are a given, bell housing and box are the issue causing me to have the temporary lump and I alredy have a prop shaft modified for the pinto lump so that'll give me time to save top have it modified for the new engine / gearbox. The only reaal issue is the cut outs for the exhaust but I suppose I can put a temporary skin on the car for the initial engine anyway.

Thanks for the input
