Steering wheel shift button

This morning a crazy idea popped up in my mind. If you have a BEC and a steering wheel with pushbuttons left and right (normally used for electric shifting); can't you use those buttons to activate your indicators ? So if you have those flappy paddle thingies and 2 pushbuttons on the steering wheel you won't have let loose you steering wheel ever again=> Much safer.

Brilliant isn't it ?

Don't know it is allowed by the IVA man though....

Wire it up so you can also run the throttle, brakes and clutch

Won't cost that much as you can then just use the wheel from your Playstation!

I'm doing this on my GTS build. I've got a Mountney wheel, but using a Sparco push-button ring sitting behind the wheel type setup to control the indicators.

I didn't like the Sierra column coweling or switches, so have in essence done away with it, shortened the steering shaft, and looks a bit smarter and neater.

I can't foresee any issues, as long as the switches are clearly labelled for IVA. As the buttons I'm using sit behind the dish of the steering wheel, I can't see an issues with protrusions.

I'll try and upload some photos later today when I'm home to show what I've done so far.

Unless someone who has already done this can clarify?

I thought that this wasn't alowed.

The steering wheel needs to be padded.

I would asume that buttons will be hard plastic with sharp edges

Wouldn't know though what would happen if you managed to get some rubber ones

I know someone who made their own circuit to do all this and more on their Caterham (also included main beam flash and PTT for a radio system).

So its definitely viable and useful but as others said probably best left until after IVA.
